I span it up to about 1500 RPM in the lathe and the centrifugal switch arms stayed put - it didn't actuate. In my experience these switches actuate at fairly low RPM and it's usually possible to spin the rotor sufficiently fast with a length of cord around the rotor shaft, but maybe this motor is an exception? This motor is rated about 3000 RPM.

Yes, as per that YouTube quickie.
The motor starts normally but the switch doesn't move and so the start winding remains energised when the motor appears to be running at full speed.
The corrosion in your photo looks uniform across both tin plate and spring I think they are a set. A 60hz motor runs slow on 50hz anyway should be something like 1700rpm or so on the motor plate for a 4 pole. Your 2 pole should be around 300rpm slow in the UK compared to the plate.
If you have a clamp meter check the start /run current. Normally the start pulse is high. If it stays above the plate current off load the motor is toast or the start cap is bad

As I have had the motor apart and manually manipulated the centrifugal switch several times over I'm now reassembling just to check whether it now works. Fingers crossed.
Ok, it's now reassembled for the n-th time!
This time it's working correctly. The centrifugal switch clicks in and out as you would expect. It even does this if I spin the rotor up by hand using a length of cord.
I have no idea exactly what the problem was but I guess the switch must somehow have become a bit sticky.
