I’ve had a few requests for this video. How to do black oxide finishing in the home shop. Hope you enjoy it.

I’ve got a commission to make some stands for a sculptor, and she’d like a black oxide finish but I’m struggling to find the kits here and no-one selling them in the UK will ship here. My poor French may be hindering my search so any advice from @barking mat @KemppiFrog @MCKDAVID et al welcome, or is there anything else I could use?

She wasn’t keen on my idea of heating them up and chucking them in dirty engine oil, don’t know why, works for me...

Better finding someone local, you can use mine if you like a long drive....

if you want cheap oxy acetylene here, easiest way is to buy a second hand kit from leboncoin, and exhange the bottles for full ones as necessary. These portapaks are non contract bottles, so you own them on an exchange basis. The value is associated to how much gas is left it seems ranging from a 100 to 750 for a new set. I paid 150 euros for mine, with two empty bottles and all the kit, trolley, regs, hoses mixer shank and an assortment of nozzles etc. My bottles were empty so just took them in for exchange. My regs were fine (not that old, but the hoses were showing their age, so for teh sake of a few quid a metre changed them at the same time.. Here's a couple of quick examples, easy to search under
