I planted some spring onion and another type of onion the other week, in an area around 1/20th of the vegetable patch, just in a corner. Can anyone guess which is the only area of the vegetable patch that the local cats are using as a toilet?

The assorted runners aren't exactly growing at an alarming rate. Same ground for 3 years running I reckon is the issue. Had half a dozen plants completely stripped down to the woody stalk too

Still not prepared to use nematodes though. I'm worried they'll migrate into my brain through the tinfoil hat. Actually it's more I don't want to do the predators out of a meal.

i just buy slug pellets and sprinkle round the garden sorts them along with using a spray to kill lilly beatles and soapy water to kill green and black fly

The slugs & snails in our gardens are simply scoffing the pellets and thriving. I have this seasons pellets from three different suppliers

String lots of black cotton crisscross & in tight grids on sticks so it is about six inches from the ground ,that will keep them off the protected area. I have occasionally used 750mm wide pig fence stock wire on sticks too with good effect.

Same happened in the flower beds this year , after a four years break of not using nematode control

Use slug Nematode treatment ...... wet the ground well towards evening then apply the nematodes from a watering can with the rose turned up wards to get a nice soft spray as instructed . Keep the soil moist at night , repeat the application 3 weeks later .

Will give that a try cheers. The slugs have totally destroyed my dahlias.

Cheers, I'll have a go at that. I did have some wire setting when the onion sets were in there, but when they all died over winter I took it away.

Invasive ivy, how can I get rid of it?

Years ago, before we bought the house, the owner hived off a strip of land was "our" garden and sold / transferred to a neighbour to give separate access to each property.

The neighbour planted ivy along the new boundary fence which has invaded my side and spread across the lawn. When I cleared for the veg patch I physically pulled up the runners. You can see a large patch to the left of the picture / behind the tree:

A lad at work reckons he gets a bottle of our phosphoric acid coil cleaner, dips a random runner end of the ivy into it and it sucks it back up and kills the plant. Sounds far fetched to me.

I posted this on another thread, but might get more garden type coverage here.

3 years ago I bought this bug house thing, hung it on the fence in the garden….. and nothing happened.
This year I moved it along one fence panel, for some reason. I’ve just noticed it’s now full, all the little houses are plugged with dirt. Never happened before, so I assume it’s in a better positioning now, maybe more sun later in the sky.

Any idea what critter hides/breeds in these holes?



The last two summers it was on that fence pole to the left. It’s 8pm now and the sun has just dropped behind the house, putting it in the shade.

Strimmer will make quick work of that.
Cut the ivy around the tree by hand, and in a few weeks it will pull off easily - tho I usually pull it straight after cutting, its strong stuff..

I've only got a few crappy 230V line strimmers. I need to dig out and get going, this spares or repairs, 36V Einhell brush cutter.

If you put a strimmer on ivy won't you just end up with a lot more plants taking root?

I always pull and bag...I could be wrong...it's just what I've always done!

When I cleared the bean patch it was similarly overgrown. I pulled then burnt in the bean trench. Same again I suppose:

The ash formed the first layer of the organic "layer cake" in the bean trench; ash, sifted soil, compost, grass cuttings, repeat.

With hindsight I'd have mixed it all up. I think I'll have the BiL dig it all over once this years beans are finished.
