Hmmm. Deformed tomatoes including dwarfism ............ just how far are you from Chernobyl? Do they glow in the dark as well ?

There are at least 3 varieties of tomatoes in the bowl, maybe 4 varieties. Only 6 varieties are sown and I don't remember which ones are where. The variety that looks like red pepper has grown together. This is an exception, not a rule.

I planted some lupin seeds in the flower bed. Not one single, solitary lupin.
I must have dropped a few seeds, one landed in a crack in the paving and voila!

I've only really grown beans and more beans. If you have a glut then giving them to friends, neighbours, folk up the pub goes down well.

A lad at work has moved from south London to Kent. He was talking to a lad from north London. Both white btw:

- Me bruvver come over the other day and picked an apple off da tree!

- Wot you never ate it?

- Yeah, but we soaked it in salt water for an hour so the maggots all come out.

Me: Oi, you pair of (plural beginning with c), I suppose you think apples come from supermarkets?

-No but you gotta soak dem so da worms come out.

-Sum people eat berries straight off da bushes!

I am lucky enough to be eating blackberries straight from the bush , just give them the eye first , any odd tasting ones get spat out .luckily very few and according to the witness marks on the path and truck the birds are enjoying them too, happy days

Mice just love finding & eating lupin seeds . Best grow them in plant pots , over winter then & plant them out next spring . Use plenty of snail & slug deterrents.

It used to be said that , " God spat in all the black berries after the 14 August " as they were usually flyblown with a nice fat maggot inside them .
This year there are still a lot of quality black berries locally , this time last year I made four pounds of black berry jam from fresh picked berries .

Take the dead blossom off to reduce the chances of blossom end rot , Rush out and buy some granny tights to support the marrow , feed the ground like mad with a high quality fertilizer that contains fish & seaweed , @ a pint a day

I would cut off the dead leaves & any courgettes that are damaged / rotten. Ours didnt do too well this year but the tomatoes have exceeded all expectations, nice sunny south facing spot, I have never had much luck with toms but for the first time in my life have grown a massive crop. Captain Beefheart romainian beefsteak variety from Seaspring seeds. They are huge, hardly any seeds just thick tasty flesh with a good flavour. Three plants now 6ft high & spreading out. Tomatoes as big as apples. I have been slicing them up for lunch & putting some thinly sliced red onion with them and a sprinkling of Sumac & salt, glorious! Or toasted with cheese, everything has to have tomatoes with it, Going to be making sauce & freezing some too.
Some say they agravate arthritis but i will just have to put up with that!
Off to the horticultural show on saturday.

You must live in the South.
Tomatoes in the midlands are so late, they haven't long started to go red.

Our allotment suffers with blight...all my toms were wiped out with blight a few months ago . I've never had luck with them... But this year a plant popped up which I thought was a weed but turned out to be a tom...I have my fingers crossed!

Clean knife or scissors then sterilize blades with meths on a rag move the cut off stuff well away from the plant

Increase the spacing between your toms to 700 mm as damp still air promotes blight that already in the air & soils and as soon as fruits appear remove leaves below the fruits . Look up pruning toms to remove " the middle leg sprouts " which take a lot of energy off your plants

Its said to be getting cold overnight this week, 7 degrees or so. I am wondering if I should start to bring the mangos indoors or in shed overnight. I'm unsure how low they can tollerate?
Thats if the rain doesnt drown them first!

Slip the fruit in the leg of a tight . cut two thongs in the unused top part and use them to tie the leg & fruit to the Kerplunk inserted canes . ( Think of your scrotum holding a marrow being hung from the base of your JT ).
If you are lucky you can get four such bags off one pair of nylons or tights


Tip
Hollow out a five inch dia marrow from the stalk end , prick the bottom end with half a dozen knitting needle sized holes , fill it with brown sugar , insert it torpedo style in the leg of a nylon . marow and hang it inside a plastic bag with a bowl in the bottom . Over the weeks as the sugar ferments and produces alcohol you'll get a very nice sweet tasting liquid in the bowl that's fairly alcoholic ....... just in time for Crimbo.

The one, now supported butternut squash I think should maybe be harvested (& eaten) asap? It's got some spots on it. Again I've been slack on the watering. I'd left it on the plant as I thought it was supposed to darken before picking? If I pick it anyway maybe the tiddlers on the plant will grow a bit.

Watered and fed the beans and the squash just now. Supposed to be a bright, sunny day. If the beans pick up I'll know it was lack of water.

The weather hasn t given any lack of water here! A risk of too much as they are not draining as well as I hoped.

My dad has a temp sensor on the dash of his car and it shows it went down to 0.4c overnight a couple days ago. Likely lower outside as there will be a thermal gradient.

My mango saplings dont look harmed yet,they do not like cold. Going to bring them near the house and cover them over night and perhaps bring them in if it gets cold again.
