How do I get the pin out of this pulley?

If it is a roll pin (and you cannot punch it out) shove a drill bit down it, and perhaps increment the size upwards until you drill it all out or finish with just pulling out the last shards.

If it's a roll pin, as I suspect it it, you ought to be able to poke it through and see light through it. At least I can't see any reason why that shouldn't be so.

To punch it out you need an parallel punch which fits pretty much exactly and which will be expensive. Believe me on this because I once had the problem of driving a roll pin out of some car brakes. I bought a set of three punches for a fiver and in a moment of madness, bought a same time, a single punch of the size I believed right for £6. The best fitting of the cheapies just bent, the £6 one didn't finch, the roll pin moved.

Quite often HSS drills will not touch roll pins, If you have a spare allen key of a size you can cut and grind to the right size to punch the pin, it should work a treat,

That's worth remembering, because drilling it out was something which occurred to me. But you'd have to be accurate, and the things it's embedded in being soft, you could make a right mess.

Makes sense. I thought the big thing about HSS was its ability to keep its properties when hot.

Anyway, spring steel, HSS, they're both going to be difficult to drill.

Hss Cobalt/solid carbide Drills. High speed carbide burrs. Get it sparked out. Turn down a bit of stubs silver steel, flame harden and temper it, and use as tailor made punch
It Depends on its value to you and what you have access to. Never give up though! Things arn't always as they seem. This is just what id try

as in post 20 and warm it up if need be and use correct size punch .its sprung in so it will remove unless u butcher it

If it's burred over , you could try hitting the end of it and the pulley with an angle grinder, then with the right size punch it should knock out ok.

On a mower it won't be going that fast and it's near the centre anyway. Plus he wouldn't be taking much off. Looking at it again though, a parallel punch and a decent hammer and it should just smack through. That trick is useful though if you have a bit of the roll pin sticking out and burred over.

I think this is being over complicated here! Yes you can drill them out with a cobat drill or get it out with a grinder, or anneal them, but generally speaking even when burred over it's still normally just a case of having the right size punch and giving it a good clout!

I love how you've all been debating this while I've spent 2 1/2 hours in the garage heating and beating

So, no surprise, but the advice to heat it and whack it with something flat of the same diameter worked. I have a little heat gun (£20 off amazon, incl gas and with electric start) so threatened it with that and used a rivet to whack through. I thought it would bend but it did it no problem.

Same with the next four roll pins, including one on the axle that was a lot more meaty (5mm).

Finally got the gearbox apart and was very relieved to find that both gears are in good shape and it was the needle / roller bearing that takes the pulley shaft that had seized. That was a lot more painful to get out. I drilled with a 10mm drill to destroy the rollers, then heated the casing and levered it out with a big screwdriver. Took an hour but it's out!

Now I'm off to ebay to find a 13mm roller bearing.

I'm glad you sorted it, but it's a bit of an anti-climax.

I thought you'd at least have to use a diamond tipped iridium hafnium alloy widget.
