Hot Tub running costs

A neighbour of mine has about half a dozen hot tubs (several makes) with his letting properties - endless problems, broken pump impellors, blown capacitors, burnt out motors, heating elements & control units. They are horrible to work on with pipes & cables buried in expanding foam. He was pricing a replacement controller for one last week, £700+.
If you do go for one best try and get some sound recommendations.

i went and looked at one for someone, tested it out as it was tripping the breaker and told him that it was the element in a pipe that coul;d be replaced but i wasnt interested in fixing it even if he got the parts

you do mean to make a coil and have the fire within the middle of it or are you after heat exchanger in the water ?

I have had a 6 person one for 2 years now. Me and the wife use it most days.
Ours is well insulated as its designed for Canada.
Chemicals cost about 2-300 a year.
electricity I am not sure on the tub alone usage, but the house with a big workshop, electric shower, hob etc and an electric car is about £150 per month.
Ours does have an o3 generator installed, and remember you will need to change the water every 3 months and give everything a very good clean.

Cant see filling with sand working.

You can bend any tube with sand, but sometimes it needs heat as well.

Ours does have an o3 generator installed, and remember you will need to change the water every 3 months and give everything a very good clean.

Sister had a big house with an indoor swimming pool. I asked brother in law how often water need changing and he told me the filters are so efficient that all it needed was occasional topping up and had never been drained in almost 10 years

I keep on hearing that hot tubs are a bit of a health risk at public places like spa clinics, unless you change the water every couple of days. Less so private, but keeping warm water with bodies frequently lounging in it sounds like sharing baths at boarding school....

Got invited over for dinner by my German lot. Before, we cooked (ourselves!) in the sauna then dived into the long pool for a length, repeat. This was in January...and the pool was under 10°

Going back to the St Barbara Hot Tub Book. 'Frolicking' was mentioned;, but, if decent temps are kept up, it leads to the 'limp noodle effect', so that chapter wasn't very long.

now you could build something like this

with a door on the front with knowledge of a masonary heater used as a heater when hot tub is open and shut offs from the main heat of the fire

have a suncken hot tub and then deck over it

you can use folded instead of a slide out but you loose a seating area

the best of 3 worlds heated and seated area and also a hot tub heater with fireplace

fireplace has 2 uses for sitting with the decking and also hot tub with a heated area

Ive a small room in my house thats warm and toasty , and has a small hot tub in it , small enough to be filled with toasty hot water as required , easy to clean and handy to use ,,,,
we call it the bathroom .... seems to tick most of the above boxes and has very few of the down ,, hot tub, nope Im out , its looking like a lot of expense and hassle for a low return.

A phrase used by those posh people who get out of the swimming pool to pee.

I wonder why people don't have UV lights under the covers? -maybe a UV light powerful enough to do anything is a lot of power? idk



but... get an ozone generator... people living off grid with well water use them... think of a little fish tank bubbler but it's putting out o3 - a familiar smell to welders, it's the gas that's created when you have a spark in fresh air

it kills pretty much anything in the water, and it'll be trapped between the water and the cover killing anything there too..... when you take the cover off fresh air will waft it away and it'll do you no harm

UV lights dont kill stuff they disrupt the DNA and stop them reproducing. Ever seen the scum around the edge of a swimming pool its called Bio Film. Its some of the dead stuff in its self also a hazard as other stuff grows in it.
UV and filtration are a great asset but you will also need filters and maintenance, we can then look at the Hard / soft water debate!
Swimming pools I would imagine are different as the temperature is lower, once you hit the magical 16 Degrees C the issues multiply at an alarming rate.

First one would work but I think you would need 2 which will cost more than the pre made coils.

The others are steel so will rust.

Those plate exchangers are not a cheap diy option. And a pain in the butt if your ramping temperatures up and down.

Mrs DomDom has a Coast Spa one, rigid with 4 seats etc. I drained it and turned it off because it was using about 18 units a day which comes to £5.40 ish.

This is with a well insulated lid etc. Utterly ridiculous running cost. I’m now looking into replacing a 5kw heater with an air source heat pump. They seem to be about 1kw/h consumed but they put 3 times this into the water.

How much is an air sourced heat pump though?!

One of my first "interesting" jobs when I started out in the hiab game was reversing my old 8 wheeler hiab wagon onto Patrington cricket pitch out near Spurn Point to load a hot tub that I delivered to Hedon, a few miles west.

Aside from the hilarious chaos that ensued when 22 tons of wagon got stuck on the pitch , the guy who was selling it it told me that it seemed a nice idea but who wants to get out of a hot tub into typically dismal British weather? Less than 6 months after craning it into a back garden in Hedon, (and at this point I openly admit that I always thought Hedon was the home of Heddonism ), out it came and the seller told me the same thing as the man he bought it from.

It then went to Gilberdyke, a few miles west of Hull, and lasted another 6 months before I moved it yet again to the by now familiar story...

Friend of mine owns a crane company and they are forever putting them in and taking them out.

my parents used to have one, it was there when I lived at home.... waste of time really, once you tried it once there wasn't much point in using it again... it didn't really do anything or help you relax

nephew and niece loved it with bubble bath making a tower of bubbles 7ft high
