Hot Tub running costs

Some friends of ours bought a house with a really nice pool and a brick built pool house. Sounds great but apparently it

I know somebody that's got an indoor pool. Difference is it's within a massively insulated house with MVHR. Heat loss is not that bad. He is of late though finding issues with air tightness in the fabric that his builders missed. He can afford it put it that way.

Anyway, I think we have a solution. Bring/break your own pallets:

That looks rather close! I can see a wind change or a falling ember result in that fire going out quite quickly!! Good idea though! I would like to do similar for our hot tub for the initial heat ups!

I’m not seeing how keeping fish in a boat would benefit the floor, transom or stringers, maybe you have very strange friends?

And fish in a hot tub, yeh your friends are definitely in the spectrum of just a little bit ….. “special”

I guess the theory was, it keep water out, so it would keep water in and work as a pond liner . . so sunk it in the ground - instant pond.

As for the other one - her brother gave her/left the hot tub in her garden . . . and she couldn't be bothered with the hole digging but wanted a fish pond . . .

Seems to work well for both of them - at little to no expense.

if you have gas central heating a pump and a heat exchanger seam like the obvious choice to me - gas heating being a hell of a lot cheaper than electric

guess you'd need to turn all your radiators down/off in the summer when you don't want to heat the house but want to heat the hot tub..... could put the heat exchanger on the hot water tank circuit if you have a hot water tank

Yeh from what I’ve read, it costs a huge amount to heat it up bit then when it’s up to temp just a few quid a day to keep it there, maybe that’s where they’re going wrong, they’re not meant to be switched off between uses.

My son runs his like that 100 quid per month so he has drained it for now..

The Lagger in work has been making insulated jackets etc for them, so Lagging is Key.
Personally its the stuff living in the water that would put me off, you really have to keep on top of the daily testing to avoid any issues.
But a warm environment without the proper care is the perfect breeding ground for bacteria. Microbes can develop swiftly in the heat and spread rapidly to bathers. Hot tub rash (folliculitis), shigellosis, E-coli, cryptosporidium and Legionnaires disease are all nasties that can develop in a hot tub and cause serious issues, especially to more vulnerable users.
But keep on top of the maintenance and just enjoy

I wonder why people don't have UV lights under the covers? -maybe a UV light powerful enough to do anything is a lot of power? idk



but... get an ozone generator... people living off grid with well water use them... think of a little fish tank bubbler but it's putting out o3 - a familiar smell to welders, it's the gas that's created when you have a spark in fresh air

it kills pretty much anything in the water, and it'll be trapped between the water and the cover killing anything there too..... when you take the cover off fresh air will waft it away and it'll do you no harm

a uv filter would need to be in in the water and pumped 24 hours a day like a garden pond

Spotted stainless coils on ebay that look the job but owch on the price (£400) for the size I want.

How easy would it be to bend into a coil 12m of 32mm 1.5mm tube?

Cant see filling with sand working.

you do mean to make a coil and have the fire within the middle of it or are you after heat exchanger in the water ?

The chemicals arent a big deal. If folk shower before they go in ours needs 15g of chlorine a day if you start with the correct levels after a refill. Its a 1500L tub (8seater). Takes 5 mins to measure and you soon get used to how much needs adding.

A coil from a diesel steam pressure washer would work...

I bent some 20mm 1.5 wall into a coil 500 OD for a vinegar distillation apparatus I built for a guy. Think there’s pics / thread on here. Maybe.

That was a pain in the hoop. Even with a Chinese pipe crimper, it took a lot of skill to not get it like a 50p. The only way is with a powered roller

A neighbour of mine has about half a dozen hot tubs (several makes) with his letting properties - endless problems, broken pump impellors, blown capacitors, burnt out motors, heating elements & control units. They are horrible to work on with pipes & cables buried in expanding foam. He was pricing a replacement controller for one last week, £700+.
If you do go for one best try and get some sound recommendations.
