Hose crimp clips

As I don't have a hose crimp tool, how easy is it to crimp hose clips with end cutters ... assuming it's done carefully?

(Obviously it's important to always use the right tool for the job, but I'm still expecing to be told to only ever use the right tool for the job. )

Easy enough. The proper tool just helps keep it square so watch it as you do it and don't over tighten and cut the ear off!

Just get the Oertiker Single Ear O Clips and the Knipex crimps. Job done properly every time.

These are the ones you want. Better for tight spaces as you can crimp in the side too.

Oertiker make their own crimping tool. I have a couple, but not really necessary, anything of a similar design will do quite nicely,

I have a cheap pair and a Knipex pair. Both do the job but as @Brad93 says the Knipex ones are really nice to use.

You do have to be careful on ebay as when I bought my Knipex ones I found a few places listing theirs as Knipex/Oetiker but what they were selling were just the cheap ones. I contacted one of the sellers and they gave me the cock and bull story "Our guys use these one all the time and they are better than the Knipex ones", I can tell you they are not.

For the sake of £30 for a crimp tool I don't expect to use again this side of whenever, I'll go with the carpeners pincers / end cutters I've already got. Thanks all.

I’ve done it with cutters before simply when access isn’t available going straight on. Cutters do apply uneven pressure so if you can do it from both sides that would be better.
Cooler not sprung a leak has it?

I was thinking of using this sort of thing, so the crimp should be square to the hose.

No problems with the cooler. (See PM.)

I use mine all the time though on all manner of pipes.

That's exactly what I used recently on single ear crimps, worked well and dead straight

Just buy one of the cheap ones, make sure you get one with the side crimping facility. Once you've used single or double eared clips you'll be surprised how many times you'll use them.Obviously that's reliant on you having a selection of sizes

You don't need to spend £30+ on Knipex pliers.

A better deal than I get from James Binnie, but if you’ve left that’s probably not gonna happen.

I do have the pliers for the clips, perks from a old job.

But I have used a old pair of nail pincers to crimp them shut. I do admit they work better on the single lugs, but will do a good enough job on the double ones.

I have successfully crimped up the weak ford diesel pipes when the o rings have failed in the past.
