Well I bought an Ac/dc tig earlier in the year with great plans to have a go at aluminium and such with it seeing as there wasn't much else to do, ended up busier than ever so only used it for mild steel so far.

Ditto. Well mines DC but that's good enough for copper I'm told. I wanted to get back into tigging stuff as I can get a shot of a mates one sometimes but not enough to keep my hand in. Since it arrived I have been flat out with work! Not complaining but the list of things to do seem to get longer.....

I'm finding when I've been doing a lot of mig welding it takes a while to get into tig.

Thanks for that. Sent it via PM as I wasn't sure about posting the links on here but I cant think it would be a problem.

The nostrils are different on the one Joshua DeLisle does in his video. Its getting the alignment of them that's a pain. If they are wrong it throws everything else out. I used the point at the hinge of the jaw as a datum and that seemed to be a good solution.

Be interesting to see what your colleague makes of it.

Yeah, that's where I went wrong; I tacked them down flat rather than leaving the nostrils standing upright - Gary Huston made the same mistake too!

Colleague has been getting regular updates as it has all progressed! He's not a techie teacher; computing, same faculty - or in the 'typing pool' with business as I call them! He's trapped at the far end of the English corridor and had an even more isolated time than most teachers (we're not allowed to congregate or mix) but we have 'Man Dates' at opposite ends of his classroom once a week when non-contact periods have coincided and had a blether.

More horsing around!

Had a couple of hours spare this afternoon so got it tacked out. The disc is sits on is just scrap and won't be staying. Need to weld it out and grind it back and it'll be good.

Thoughts so far:
1 - Tacking it to a piece of scrap was really handy for handling purposes. You can clamp it to the bench or hold it or whatever. Gives you something to lever against.
2 - 1.6 is ample. Next one will be non ferrous anyhow but it'll be a lot thinner.
3 - I started putting the joiner piece in under the chin and ended up with a 5mm gap at the bottom. Its no bother but I may try starting at the bottom like Delisle does in his video next time.
4 - The ears are easier if you do the backs first then put the front / eye on last.

Personally I would be tempted to weld it up and leave the weld, assuming of course it comes out neat enough.

Dunno Brad. I'm into it for 6 hours but slow time. I reckon I'll get change from 10 hours when its done. Less if I can weld it nicely like Hood says. Its hard to say in mild. Stainless or Copper you could justify a decent price tag but people will say 'its just steel innit'. this was a tester anyway. I reckon if I did them in corten they would work.

@James1979 Nice work! Again, miles ahead of me; spent a couple of hours using grinding and flap discs this afternoon but didn't want to upset the neighbours too much. Another few hours should make it look presentable but I'm afraid she'll be seeing it first in its current state.

Where I was going with it I think. However I sell fire pits for £500 and although I dont make a living just out of them its a decent enough turnover. People are strange. I sold something to a woman in SW17 the other day - just rang up told me what she wanted, didn't ask the price. Sent her the drawings and the quote. She had her 'people' pay it before I even got the approval email for the quote

Very nice. Sturdy looking but compact and concise. Often the fire pits I’ve seen just look too clumsy if that makes sense, like there’s a tonne of metal there serving no purpose.

The firepit market got a bit saturated before Christmas so we will see how it pans out. I've a few more things in the messing about stage using that basic design - chimenea being one.
