Horrendous welding and broken brained repairs

@mtt.tr Not quite as bad, But I remember I was adjusting some disc brakes on a push bike & this lad rotated the wheel jamming my finger nail in the rotor

I was not best happy to say the least!

When I were an apprentice some years ago, I sailed with a chief engineer with a finger missing!

His claim to fame was he could drink 20 pints, and it still bleeping hurt when you try to clean your motorcycle chain while its running on a center stand with a hangover.

Apart from that he was a really clever guy.

Always understood da cylinders should be used vertically for a safety valve inside to operate if needed.

That is true. But the cylinder in Parm's photo is the oxygen. They are laid on their side for the simple reason that then they cannot fall over. The acetylene is made in a generator, on demand, by dripping water onto calcium carbide. Much lower pressure than in a cylinder (you need a different torch). There is likely no acetylene plant in the whole country.

The light bulbs on his 3-phase electrical panel are to tell him if a phase drops out. Where I worked (Ghana), insulation tape and chocolate blocks were too expensive so just twist the wires together and wrap with a piece of torn up carrier bag.

He does normally, that day he wasn’t working, we were out doing something and he just popped in

Can you put in rivets by just heating the tail end ?

There will be some. The rivet will have lengthened. Not as much, I grant you, as a fully heated rivet.

and it will have expanded sideways in the shoe so wont be a loose fit

Just seen another one on that channel where they are "adjusting" a lorry driveshaft by putting it on their lathe between centres and beating it with a lump hammer, then welding it with the return through the lathe and letting the spatter fall on the lathe bed.

They must really hate that poor lathe ?
