I'll have to dig out my sheet metal roller and do a bit of measuring, l need a large reduction gear making.

Done a bit more today turned up the bush for the top mounting pivot pin and cut the locating hole in the top plate for the bush, just need to weld it in later.

It only needs to lift 250kg max

550lb is a fair chunk though.

What's the green stuff in the tin?

It's a cutting/threading lubricant jelly, I find it works well for drilling in the lathe and holesaws in the mag drill.

PS. I think it's this stuff, I've had for about 20 years now, one of those multiple workshop tin things, a bit like copper slip, just increases the chance of finding it.......

Where I work they use a 1.5T engine crane to lift heavy items onto the big lathe or big crankshaft grinder.

The legs of the engine crane are wide enough to fit neatly either side of the tailstock end. Being on wheels with steering it's of course also handy to load/unload & transport said heavy lumps to/from the machine also.

Given enough space, I suppose an A Frame Gantry would also do the job.

You really need to make sure that the carriage roller profile matches that of the I beam! As in if an RSJ with taper flanges or a UB etc with parallel flanges.

Thats true but I think its very rare someone would use a UB i cant remember seeing one used for that purpose , RSJs tend to be more commonly available second hand too

These rollers have a flat section for half width and a tapered section so cater for both.

Welded in the pivot pin bushing into the top mounting plate and added a bit of extra strengthening today, hopefully pull it up/install it into the joists tomorrow..... (we need a "Fingers Crossed" smiley)....

It really really is just too hot to do anything today, but I managed to drag the mag drill out and drill 8 holes for angle iron mounting plates for the chemical fixings into the walls (sorry I didn't take any photo's).

Then I slowly (way to hot to move fast) installed the top mounting plate, hopefully the pictures tell the story...

The plate is now held in place with wood screws into the joist from below, extra joists and angle iron brackets chemically fixed into the walls are to be installed and bolted to the mounting plate...more soon

It's now down to the wood bothering bit next, strengthening the floor joists for sideways loading tomorrow......
