It did harden at 1000c and quench in oil but because I messed around with it so much it curved slightly on the last (successful) go
So now it’s annealed again so I can straighten it out tommorow
I’ve also made a little holder to keep it stood up in the furnace , so it should remain straight
I should have experimented first instead of being gung ho

Looks like it should be in my draw My old one back from 1974 snapped on me a couple of months ago.That chopper looks like it should be on a Halloween film set!
I was not aware how much I actually used it till then.

Ok, so I managed to get a curve in the chopper after my incompetence in hardening.
It worked a great the first time round, but I just didn’t realise that. A file was skating off but I thought it should skate more
important lesson learnt.
Last night I heated it up again and let it cool in the kiln. I’ve just been out and straightened it with BFH and the anvil. It’s as straight as a ruler

What were you chopping to snap it?Looks like it should be in my draw My old one back from 1974 snapped on me a couple of months ago.
I was not aware how much I actually used it till then.

Are you normalizing before hardening ? this involves heating to above hardening temperature removing from the furnace and air cooling. It refines the grain in the steel and removes stress that can lead to warping. Also when you quench dip the blade edge first vertically into the oil/water to cool both sides evenly and help prevent warping.

How hot are you getting it to quench ? Have you tested it for magnetism again before quench you might be getting it too hot.

It was non magnetic each time, tested with a magnetic. I dropped the temp to 900 and it’s worked a treat. Currently tempering in the house oven

the rescued file blade has been tempted and a very quick going with 120, 320 and 400, then a quick buff.
it’s by no means perfect and it’s rescued from a disaster. I’m happy with this so far and learnt a huge amount. Most important lesson is to leave some meat on the edge then grind off after heat treatment, it allows for removal of those imperfections.
While it’s not perfect, I’m happy with the results as this is the furthest I’ve ever got with a knife.
Ive got several boxes of farriers rasps so will have another go at making a camp style knife with a shallower and shorter bevel so it’s a bit more sturdy

I felt something strange as I was chopping and the handle just fell off. No force involved...
I was not really holding the handle to be honest. Front and rear of the blade..
