If you are of a mechanical or engineering persuasion, can I recommend you take up Meccano.

Still available and hundreds of dealers on the net. Has a worldwide following. You can build incredibly complex and intricate mechanisms. Spanner and screwdriver is all you need.

Nowadays with Arduino, stepper motors etc the sky is the limit. You can build some seriously complex machinery. I've been into Meccano since I was 13. I highly recommend.

I like being paid for my graft but hobby wise i just pick up the rods or the gun / rifle or let the dog train me for a few hours
If you start producing stuff ad s hobby you need to find plsces for it to go to then it becomes a job

I have quiet hobbies for inside when I need to be sociable :-)

Building and tinkering with RC stuff, I get away with that on the kitchen table, also on a tray in front of the TV although quite a few bearings and small screws down the sofa! Also into Arduino and electronics, can happily spend an evening with the laptop next to family watching crud on the telly programming etc. Designing then next noisy project in sketchup is fun too.

Marquetry. Can be done on a cutting board on the dining room table. Start with a kit containing everything then build up skill level. Results are so impressive.

Then there's Astronomy, which is a hobby of opportunity pending weather conditions, and can be very enjoyable and relaxing when the skies are clear.

How about knot tying? Useful and satisfying, especially making mats. The International Guild of Knot Tyers have a website, maybe a local branch.
How about Ham Radio? You can start off with a crystal set, it's strangely fascinating making your own radio from 25p worth of bits. You get all the classic wailing and moaning noises, drifting from station to station, cracking fun.

Yeah, fascinating to do. Somewhere I have the ( holy grail ) "Ashley's Book" of knot tying. Over 50,000 knots.

I used to put a small sheet of plywood blocking the bottom half of my front door, put a phone book in front of it and shoot down the hall at it with a .22 air rifle from the couch in the sitting room about 25' away. Great fun and very little noise.

fly tying, very relaxing and you can make a couple of quid selling your wares once you become adept at it, i had to stop when my hands started to refuse to do fine motor stuff but did find it a very nice way to pass the time..

I do it as well very satisfying, and you can use your favourite politicians torn out the newspaper for targets.
