Help with thoughts on Knackered genny, getting the armature off?

I have a broken genny, the coils are melted, so from that point of view it is scrap. I will be attempting to take the armature from the motor taper shaft, looks like the two preferred methods are dead blow hammer, or tap a hole in the end of the armature shaft and use a bolt on a pusher to separate it. I may just go for the latter if I have a suitable tap to fit.

Just wondering which others have had success with?

I am also trying to use the old armature shaft, so wonder how easy it may be to remove the coils and iron sections to get back to the shaft, I have use of my lathe, just wondering if anyone else has done it?

The generator is a cheap 2800 Watt type aluminium windings with a Honda copy engine 6.5 HP style.

The engine seems to run OK, it will get a change of oil, but that is it.

Hi, Adrian, I would go with the tapped hole, Decent amount of weight on then a sharp tap with a hammer, I,m coming to Blackburn tomorrow morning for a couple of weeks, If you suss out the tap size,I may have one and could bring it with me, I will be setting off from home around 10-30am.

Hi Gordon, I am in work tomorrow so can not get to the motor again until evening, but no bother, I should have a suitable selection of Taps to hand, just have to match with bolt sizes I have.

Just in case this is of use to anyone else, the armature is now off.

The bolt down the middle holding the armature against the taper shaft was a long M8. the centre hole down the armature was 10mm, so I cut an M12 thread in it, pleanty of cutting oil used and backing of the tap as it was a bit small a hole. But after cutting around 25 to 30mm, I decided that was long enough. Some 9mm ish bar down the middle and a few turns on a M12 Bolt in the end and off it pop'ed.

The thing looked very similar to this borrowed picture off the web.


the fan was held in place with a mixture of snap in lugs and a C clip so that came off easy enough. The bearing on the end would not shift, possibly down to me cutting the internal thread forcing it to be a bit tighter, but use of an angle grinder and slitting disk had this removed.

The windings are again aluminium, and I just used my hacksaw to slice though the tops of both windings and then a big screwdriver to lever the wires out.. The contact rings knocked off the end and the plasic end pieces also came off with a lever (screwdriver).

the laminations were boring but something of a therapeutic thing to remove one by one, each one had 4 small, sort of spot welds to its neighbour.

But a small sharp flat blade between each lamination, break the spots and then fold up to remove off the shaft. Each lamination is 0.5mm thick and there are a lot of them.

I tried several stages to bash them off the shaft to no avail and I did not want to damage the shaft, just in case so one by one seemed to be the safe way to do it.

At the end I have this, the main section is a parallel 24mm shaft. Here are also pictures of the tapped end and the taper end.





Now just have to think of what I will be doing with it all?

I tap a threaded hole in the end and persuade them off with a BF slide hammer.

Anything thats on a taper will 99.9% of the time just fall off iff you give one good tap with a hammer into the taper as iff your pushing it on further...flywheels,shafts,stators ect they all work

Did an oil change on the small engine, my word were the bits of metal in there. These copy engines, in fact the whole thing is built to a price, the metal frame with tank was so light when I remember back to the the older generators, this stuff must be 1mm or even 0.8mm tubing. Slowed the governor so the engine is down to just over 2,000 rpm.

Just playing I have no real reason for the engine/frame, it was just something to do!

I cut the windings off a scrap Chinese generator rotor as well, like you I have no idea why, and ended up with hundreds of laminations all over the place.

I think I was going to couple the engine to a car alternator or some other daft project.

Yep, hundreds of the little buggers, now down the recycling yard with some other scrap, was thinking of pulley and some sort of this to use it for, but....
