Nice to see that Tony has developed the info available on the Sphere .
My info came from the son who's father used an identical lathe to my Sphere in the development of the torpedo timing mechanism in 1943 . The son was also a torpedo development guy , he said they were used to make the timing srews to arm the devices . I got the lathe with lots of American tooling & both chucks some 7 yrs ago when the son was downsizing & moving into sheltered accommodation.
The reason I say my lathe was a special is that the serial number on the front rh of the way has an unusual serial number that Robert of the American site I belong to cannot find , he is an avid Atlas /Craftsman machinery collector and perhaps the worlds foremost knowledgeable person on them . There are several unusual differences to the run of the mill Atlas too ..one is an 12 point position start thread counter , for multiple start thread cutting , none of the guys on the American site have come cross such a beast .
The serial number is 42150/ SL and the lathe id number is 343 stamped on tail stock & both chucks perhaps the 42150 is the drawing / assembly plan & SL means special length at 42 & 1/2 " or special lathe ( made to order) ?
