Don't you just hate some people...lol. I just spent 2 hours trying to take screwdrivers work. And learn the basics of sketchup......I would rather have spent 2 hours in the dentist chair. Lol

I thought fusion was hard to start but I am thinking maybe it's not that hard and it's just me. All I wanted to do was takescrewdrivers .skp file. Create a component and extrude it......not hard surely. But it is for me..

how much work is that to actualy do ive looked at 3d printing but have not got the time to wipe my backside let alone learn a new skill

Depends who you are....a university graduate seems to thrive on real world challenges. Me I always need a file to print and don't have time to.learn as I always need to start from more than the basics.

If I try to learn the basics they just don't lend themselves to the item or the data I have.

Check out the Cad gurus thread. You can see what some of the guys can do with just a scan (to scale) but they would be able to do the same with just one dimension.

I can't even take one file and turn it into an extruded model /shape.

The 3D printing side is way easier to get to grips with than the design side.
But even that needs you to be told somethings before starting.

My lad did it. Just gave him the box of hose fittings with a quick explanation and he had at it with his Vernier.

I've just asked him to give me the time it took him to draw, approx time to print and material cost. I'll guess:

- minutes,
- <1hr
- pence

It is. I don't "get it" at all. Saying that I've never tried, just half watched over laddo's shoulder.

I'm so used to AutoCAD. Old dog / new tricks etc. Fusion seems cak handed by comparison.

Will the square groove for the O-ring not cause issues with the 3DP as it overhangs? Also, the sharp corner in the base of it is a stress riser. The projecting ring that the female fitting clips onto could be similarly radiused on the entry side as it will both be stronger and ease insertion.

All I wanted to do was take screwdriver's .skp file. Create a component and extrude it.

If you are used to old school 2D drawing, it is sometimes a lot easier or more intuitive to draw a flat, 2D cross section of the item and then revolve it to get the 3D solid. That way, you are generally drawing only horizontal or vertical lines, a few sloped lines for chamfers and a few arcs for fillets.

Another way that can help is to think of how you would turn or mill the item from a big lump. Instead of starting from a blank sheet and adding things, start from a cylinder or cuboid and remove parts.

I would caution about going away from the recent discussion thinking the scan and scale method is particularly clever or good. It is a method of last resort when the original part is not available. If you have the part in your hand, careful measurement and fag packet sketch is both quicker and more likely to be accurate first time. On the one you have, there are two sets of six holes. That means you can measure the diameter of every one and take an average. Similarly the OD and ID - measure twice at right angles and average. Measure many hole-to-hole distances and average.

What you need to realise is 2d and 3d cad are totally different beasts requiring a uniquely different skill set

think of it as the skills needed to ride a bike/motorbike and drive a car, or move up from a car to HGV.... there is a limited degree of crossover: ie both are modes of transport and both will get you to your destination faster than walking etc. (assuming you dont live in a city or use uk motorways ), but the actual specifics are quite different.

once you stop trying to use 2d skills to produce 3d cad and take a few hours of driving lessons you will find life far less frustrating.

assume you know absolutely nothing and start with the very basic tutorials , not "how to design an advanced gas turbine engine in 24h" .....

IMO Fusion is one of the best "cheap" 3d packages... onshape is excellent, almost as good as it gets if you don't mind living online, and free, but with limited number of live files (if i didnt have NX and Inventor for work , i would probably onshape)

Whatever you use stick with 1 package and persevere, they all have their quirks and all do some things better than others, but they are also enough different to make switching irritating

Yep that's me. When I see how quick others can come back with a model or plan etc I think we'll that seems easier. So I get that program up again and get no further.

I really thought I was going to be forced to switch from fusion as it stupidly tells you it's going to expire and let's you go through the whole process of renewing.
But fails to tell you that you can't renew the personal copy until it actually expires.

Update

I have now used brute force

A washing mechine fitting and a drill and die grinder bits made enought room for the screw thread it works well and is fine thanks for all input peoples
