Help, I'm locked in.....

Any suggestions on how I can get out of this one. The door is locked and the motice key is snapped off in the lock.

I was thinking try to slit the bolt with an angle grinder.

Hole save through the rough diameter of the key including the bit snapped off. But a thin disc would work too

If that happened to me I'd start by taking off the plate and handles. It's just the key mechanism that's "broken" so I'd want to get to that. You may even discover some way to turn it when it's exposed, after all, the key is in there...

The mortice and the structure of the lock is designed to make it difficult for you to cut apart.

sorry its a grinder job as you wont be able to unlock the door with another key you can try but you need that door unlocked and open to get the lock out

use a slitting disk its better to lose the catch plate and replace

Move to the other side of the door - can you knock the pins out of the hinges? Then "open" the door at the hinge side, once the door is off you can remove the lock and replace as normal.
Did that many years ago with a solid wood back door that had swelled and lock had seized.

Have you tried fishing the snapped bit with a bent welding rod, see if you can get it to fall down then use another key?

I'd just do the skinny cutting disc thing and crack on with it, otherwise you could be messing about for hours ..

Some designs of mortice lock have enough room inside for the broken bit to drop down out of the way, allowing another key to be used. Wonder if that's possible in this case.

Can you not get the broken bit of key out and braze it back onto the key shaft?

Can you get a spare key in and wiggle about and give the door a few whack with a soft mallet? I did one once with a 3mm Allen key and mole dripstone help move the bits, if not it's going to be a slitting disc

Cut out the frame around the striker plate with a multi-tool, open door, remove lock assembly, then repair the frame, refit striker plate, get new key cut to lock.

Keep same lock/key comb refit lock....sorted...

it might work but first he needs a spare key

use 2 pieces of wire you need to slide the piece to the right as one piece

this should allow the lock to unlock but its time patient but because your turning to the left and over to the right the lock should unlock and open the door

this all depends on luck and if the lock will allow you to turn

but it is possible

hinge pins only work on gap doors when your dealing with a lock that travels a good 1" into the plate its not always possible to get the door out due to the clearance on the door on either side
