Help forklift

Jack and block it up so it can't go anywhere during diagnosis, the worst can happen then is the wheels start turning mid air.

Not a bad idea actually. It is fairly obvious when the thing is "working" though, the motor "hums" without having to move it. I'll mention it to the owner but it's right in front of his doors, six inches from a wall. I think he'll end up putting it somewhere else first.

So this is still ongoing and I popped in to see the owner on some other matter. Long story short, the seller is still in dialogue with him, an engineer spent three hours on it, truck is still stranded. Hey ho, no longer my problem though I'd be happy to help if I could.

I wasn't expecting anything and since I hadn't actually got it going, wasn't going to ask either. But he took me out into the workshop and asked if I "could use this".

Then he points out a lovely little Startrite bandsaw. Didn't see a make or model but it's a small footprint, quite smallish one so basically, perfect! He's going to drop it off with me tomorrow so I'll give it a quick tidy up and find a spot for it. Woohoo. Clearly it has been used for woodworking so I just keep my fingers crossed it's a version that could also do metalworking. If there is such a thing.

I think woodworking band saws run at much higher speeds so this one would need to have speed control at least. Else I can just use it for wood.

just that its a right pain to swap my horizontal setup for vertical. Now I have it!

Entry level machine but well made and worth finding a home for, most likely right next to the horizontal bandsaw. The "woodworking" shop is busy.

If its 3. Phase put a vfd on it. Very good bansaw

Yes I'm just twiddling with it now.

0.75 hp single phase, hoping there's a problem with a bored NVR switch because it's not powering up...

This pesky chap is now horribly tricky to get to but a cheaper/easier fix than a dead motor. There's not much else to check once I've ruled out any interlocks.

Thought I'd just update this forklift saga since I popped over to see the chap. Apparently he got half the money refunded so he can afford to get it fixed.

He brought in a forklift expert and they couldn't fix it either! I'm still thinking broken/intermittent wiring somewhere inaccessible and the forklift chap is apparently thinking of running an additional circuit. Since the hydraulic pump drops out under the fault condition, he going to basically overplug it. personally, I wouldn't go near a big bit of kit like that with an actual bodge.

It is reassuring to note it wasn't a simple fault which I should have easily been able to fix, on the other hand he still has a two ton doorstop in his workshop....

Heavy b*****rs fork lifts so be careful. I've been adjusting the brake shoes on mine this afternoon and jacking up 4 tons is interesting!

It wasn't until I'd finished that I learnt that the easy way is to put wooden blocks under the mast and tip it forwards which lifts the wheels off the ground. You can then block up under the frame and return the mast to vertical, leaving the wheels off the ground.

. . . lots of things are easy when you know how

year ago i was a fork lift engineer so a tip ...
when lifting a fork lift, one way is to tilt the mast as far back as poss then under the mast end put a piece of hard wood like oak or somesuch then tilt forward the mast will then lift the fork lift a small amount, block under the body, then repeat on the other side keep doing that until you achieve the height you require.

Well I told him if he wants to leave it inside the workshop up on blocks I'll happily take another look for him over the "break".

They are a small family business and I think they're shutting up shop for now. Kids home from school.

So unless I end up fixing it (or owning it!) this is probably the last you'll see of this thing. Difficult to believe they are that complicated but most of the complication is in the sheer weight and power of these devices.

I’ve got that same machine, with the right blade it’s a fantastic machine, much better than a lot of much bigger, fancier newer ones I’ve used.

Must admit is was a nice surprise. I had no intention of asking for anything, I would expect something for being able to fix it, not for just having a go (though I did have a pretty good go at it!).

The workshop is just round the corner from me so I consider them a sort of extended neighbour. My cunning plan is to just be generally helpful and develop a long term relationship which might bring in some regular work.

A question for you, in another post you said you were on a 30 sec issue with the skits. Hope you were better to go see this Non essential FLT repair?
