the bleed hoses -
a friend said that, and i took one off, and blew down it. sure enough, restriction, that then gave way - so it was stuffed, but i think it may have been one of those ones where its been done for ages, but ive just not known until somthing else went wrong.
as a precaution, i found another in the garage, and fitted it. same issue. i tested the one i took off also, and that was running free in all directions.
some people say its a valve in the flying saucer bit, but others say its just a joiner. if it IS a valve, then both of mine are stuffed, but, if its just a joiner, theyre both fine.
im not fearful of physically doing the job, its just all the measurement unknowns that bother me. its got a 3 hole on there currently, so IF this was a calculated choice in the factory and then i stick another head on that has the valves closer to the face...
id rather know that it will be ok, rather than just guessing.
i bought the engine at 75k ish and i doubt its ever had the head off. i dont know what miles i have on it now, as its in a different vehical, but i suspect 180k or so. i could probably work it out by looking at old mot records, spanned across more than one vehicle, if i really wanted to.
there has also been no difference at all in starting. im not sure i even have the glow plugs connected, and it starts first pulse of the starter, even with snow on the bonnet. its a nice engine in all other regards.
the only correlation that i can possibly see (correlation does not equal causality and all that) is that i finally got sick of the mechanical lift pump and fitted an electric one. which got rid of the very slight hesitation that would sometimes happen under load.
...so maybe that slight fuel starvation was what was "protecting" the engine prior, and now i can drive up hills without issues, maybe its tipped it over the edge?
I could just put the same head back on it, but i have a fresh one here, and, if it is the head, i wont know really if its sound without testing etc, and that will all take time and money etc. Which seems silly, as ive got a fresh head here, thats been tested and is known good.
