has any one built a trolley for a small welder that has wheels

there bit smaal to run o n carpet and my garage is carpeted bitch ! but there good for concerete so wheeling down my drive to the car if i take it with me

Thought I will come out of lurking and post a Q right off the bat I have a decent trolley for my MIG welder, but it doesnt do so well traveling over small gravel. The rear wheels just manages not to get stuck, but the front casters dont work at all! Any ideas to make a '4x4' chassis with turnable front castor wheels?

Look on ebay for a set of casters, the bigger the better. I think the ones I got were from an outfit called Sealoc, or something along those lines. 125mm I think but bigger is always better! Cut four bits of metal (I used 50x50 box because it's what I had) with 45º angles (or not if you're feeling lazy) and weld together. Simple as!

Have you considered something like I posted at reply #7? What's wrong with that? It's a simple design and it works well. The castors do turn and were very low cost, too, from Screwfix. No castors of that size could possibly work better but I'm not sure any castor of that size is designed to work on gravel, so it wouldn't be a fair criticism. If I'd used larger size wheels, the design would look out of balance, just plain wrong.

I can recommend http://www.castors-online.co.uk. I bought some from screwfix (expensive) , for my 120kg radial arm saw, and they broke. Castors on-line state; load rating, fixings centre dimensions, etc. and you can have any mix & match from them.

Hi there, yes I have considered post #7, but I dont think it will cut it. I was considering something like a blow-up castor for the back, but it is the front swivel casters that is giving me a head-ache. Like you say, size DOES matter Hmmmm, me thinks I should scratch some more head

I make quite a few trolleys for use in commercial catering and food processing environments, if you want to go on gravel or rough ground you need a Pneumatic tyred wheel, they are usually about 200 -250mm Dia, but will go almost anywhere without tripping up.

Thank you TIG Paul. That is what I thought. I just need to find inflatable swivel castors to kee pthe current 'ratio' right(level of trolley). This is going to be fun.....

I want to make another trolley that takes the two welders.

This is my shopping trolley trolley, I used a bit more than just the castors though.

Have to have the pubgas bottle at a slight angle strapped in the curved effort and rests in the tool cage at the back, but i have had no probs from it.

Hi,

I'd seriously consider a trip to Machine Mart to get some bigger wheels if I was running that rig over that surface.

4" wheels aren't expensive and I'm sure you could easily make up something that attached to the ends of the box section.

Here's my one, first welding project so it's all a bit crap.

The only thing I'd change if I was going to start over is to keep the front of the frame open to make it easier to stash stuff underneath. Eg: the angle grinder which follows the welder everywhere :-).

Pneumatic tyres off a hand trolley, and when you lift the front by the handle it sits nicely on a balance point with the front legs off the ground, so it trucks along nicely on rough ground.

It'll grow a little holster for the gun soon.

No one seems to have mentioned just how useful a wheely bin can be when it comes to a donor vehicle for those big back wheels. At least I imagine that is the case, not having done it myself of course!!
