If the main motor is connected, yes, through its windings. The windings will have a low resistance to DC so will show on a continuity test.

Ah yes, that makes sense.
It's a 30 int taper, I've got a couple of Autolock chucks and some collets, and I just got a boring head for it, I know it's a bit "cart before the horse" to get tooling prior to having the machine actually running.

Possibly! As you say, it’s quite possible the motor isn’t original (so that might explain why the rpm calculations I made don’t match up to the given gear speeds on the plate, again, it might be my calculations not being exact enough) maybe they messed with some of the wiring too in the past, but then I’m not sure why they would bother either as I can’t imagine ever needing to replace or crimp the wires on the stop and start buttons?
Interesting that it’s a 1980 machine, I wonder how long these were produced for in all.
I must admit I thought they wound down the milling machine side a few years after being bought by 600 group but that was in 1971! So they made milling machines for a good 15 years or so.

If you look at my thread you will see how I converted both the feed motor and the drive motor to delta for a vfd. I also thoroughly overhauled both motors.

My vertical has the same main motor (from memory), it was certainly 6 pole. Mine wasn't dual voltage thought.

I've been slowly reading through your thread and watching some of the videos which have been quite insightful even though it's the universal model rather than the pure vertical model like mine. I hope I won't have to put as much work into mine as you have been into yours!

So I'm not much further on with this machine, no time and all that but hopefully I'll get around to doing something with it this bank holiday weekend provided nothing crops up.
Out of curiosity, does anyone know how you're supposed to drain the coolant tank on one of these mills? The "tank" is essentially just a tray inside the welded base and the main drive motor sits just above it, mine has about 15mm or so depthwise of a thick dirty oil which I presume is just cutting oil as the fella that owned it previously never used coolant as he didn't like how it splashed everywhere and it sits just below the pump intake. There doesn't seem to be any sort of drain plug anywhere and the only access you have is from the back of the machine by removing the louvered panel.
I suppose I could slowly syringe out all the oil, not ideal though.

I used a small electric oil transfer pump to get all the liquid out of mine. Unfortunately, the thick grimy sludge that was left had to be cleaned out by hand.

The oil sits just below the pump intake, I would guess it sits off the bottom so that it doesn't pump up anything that settles.
The above is a post from my Town Woodhouse build. Half a day to clean the tank out, no way am I using it again. In the event I will need to spray some coolant at it I intend doing it from a 5 gallon container, with the table drain piped back to it. I can also move this about from machine to machine.
I can't remember if there is a drain or not. Certainly can't remember there being one. Thankfully mine was merely a bit oily, no gunge or nasty old coolant.
Anyway, a good idea I saw and plan to copy is using a tub inside the base that although it holds much less can easily be removed for cleaning. Same guy also used a 12v caravan water pump instead of the coolant pump (which also made it easier to move and use with 1p than the fixed to the base and 3p original pump)
