It is to set a stop for example when screwcutting.
Thanks all, Ill add it to the pile to think about. Have emailed 600 Group for a quote just out of curiosity. Whilst I'm a total beginner a multiple depth stop does seem like a useful addition. A home made one could indeed be a nice little project. As I say, whoever used this lathe previously had a long bolt coming off there, it looked about right to stop short of the chuck which is what steered my thinking.
Not gonna get to touch it this weekend way to much on :-( I have ordered some 1.6m gasket paper to replace the ones on the two gearboxes I took off and the paint order turned up last night so I have everything I need now I think!

Very true, full time job where i work away, 3 kids with activities every day, small holding to maintain - time is tight!
Tried to show Mrs RDR how to use the wire wheel with a view to helping tidy up a load of parts but she wasn’t keen and said why not just order all new nuts and bolts ! She then took off to discuss car colours at the dealers instead which is much more important apparently. I now have 2.5 hours of grass cutting ahead of me

My good lady doesn't really get involved with the workshop. However. Check out my post regarding my Harrison Mill's arrival "EBay-tastic".

My eldest takes the mower round and does next door's garden for £2.5 but Derbyshire is a bit far for him, don't how you've got any grass it's like the Sahara here

It is a stop but never for screw cutting. Hitting a hard stop with the half nuts engaged is a sure way to break something.
I did mange to bag an hour or so this afternoon and make a little more progress.
Continued stripping the base, ancillary components and change wheel housing, getting there but I hate stripping paint and got bored after 30mins so disassembled the change wheel area further and cleaned components up instead. I then drained the main gearbox and used the air line to push all the residual oil out and it came up pretty clean. Removed front gearbox knobs and cleaned them up. Finally mixed up some body filler and filled the major scuffs and dents on the body work.
Change wheel bits + front gear selectors cleaned the shaft for the change wheel has an oiler, which was absolutely solid, made sure it was all cleared through.
Bagging everything up as I go to try and be organised !
Change wheels all cleaned up, they were really covered in something sticky when I got started on them.
Dings and scuffs were all filled, the fibre top and side cover were particularly bad like this...
Filler drying off on various bits, side of gearbox also started to get cleaned up. Note the front spray pattern around the knobs. Seems they fitted the knobs, masked them and sprayed round them in the factory - bizarre

Great to see more progress. It's really interesting seeing your machine coming apart.
Regarding the paint spray around the gearbox control knobs, I've found a lot of bits like that on my machine. It's almost as though the paint job was an afterthought.

fftopic: but required job this evening in order to start painting the Lathe.I had the genius Idea a while back to store my compressor in the attic out of the way. The plan was to add an automatic water trap thingy to it but (you guessed it) I never got round to it which means it isn't getting the maintenance it needs and slowly fills up with water. I made the effort this evening to teach myself a lesson and hoist it down for a service. Filters cleaned, Oil changed and then emptied the tank. If anyone can link me to automated trap thingy that bleeds the compressor tank I would be grateful!
Good idea but poorly executed..
I actually have a really nice brand new Norgren regulator and filter thats been sat for over a year gathering dust. The plan (one day) is to bypass the cruddy regulator thats either on or off and exit straight from the tank to the Norgren via some proper piping to help dry the air. One day!
2.5 tubs of this came out of the tank, even with a water filter at the gun it wouldn't be helpful!

Back from working away today, started detail sanding and getting in all the awkward bits. Still some prep to do but slowly getting there and hoping to get the undercoat on soon. Cleaning out the hex bolts and recesses is particularly fiddly, best way seems to be slim wire brush on the drill and washing out with white spirit to get the grease and gunk out.

Dremel with a selection of wire brushes is excellent for detail work on awkward parts and cleaning allen heads.

Wife shouts at me for leaving tiny bits of wire all over the house.
Even the expensive ones disintegrate quickly. These have been spot on.
