I’m with you, the sooner we get fully self driving vehicles the better. Take the slow thinking meatbrain out of the equation.
To misquote sir Terry we’re just a lucky species of ape trying to understand the fundamental workings of the universe via a language devised for telling one another when the best fruit is.
With luck in a generation from now people will look at driving the way we look at baking bread; Nice to go to the effort of doing yourself once in a while if you enjoy it but in general, life’s too short and there’s better things to do.

They will cause massive frustration, traffic jams and road rage.
That's because they will never make eye contact with other driver, and will never do things like pushing out of a junction into rush-hour traffic ( like millions of us do daily) because they can't judge human reactions and they must be programmed to take no risks. So they will sit waiting.. until someone stuck behind takes a baseball bat to them..
It's called the real world, not California Dreaming.
They might work on an LA freeway, but the whole idea is a non-starter in London, Paris or wherever.

And I'm a big fan of Elon Musk.

Not sure about a deer but pretty sure it will if it loses GPS signal or just about any other malfunction within the system, the permutations for anchoring up as a default and the consequences of this are already making my toes curl.

Let me pose a question, lockdown aside, would you happily get onto an aeroplane to fly off on your hols if you knew there was no pilot at the front?
Airways are a much safer environment than the roads yet I suspect the honest answer from the majority of people is no.
Having worked in the fields of both 'normal' aviation (both civil and military) and UAV's I'm torn. But ultimately, I think I'd rather there was a pilot (a decent one!) at the front!

A computer won’t be able to see a ‘situation’ developing up ahead, it will just be able to react when the car in front slows suddenly because it hit the one in front of that.
Many a time I’ve watched people totally disregard something going on ahead, and totally run directly into the middle of a cluster crap of problems.
Seeing a car trying to join traffic ahead, I can judge how to manoeuvre to let it in with minimal disruption to myself and others.
Approaching a junction, where cars are waiting to turn across, I can slow, flash them across, release the 10 vehicles behind them, rather than just ignorantly block the road by pulling up across the turning cars intended route. Like the dozen cars in front of me just did.....
Before I ever used one I thought cruise control was a sure fire recipe for disaster, until I tried it one day, and found it to be a very effective way to travel, all the better to leave me to observe the road and traffic, without having to keep looking down and checking/adjusting speed.

Is there any reason why you wouldn’t be able to still do any of that? (Genuine question, I’ve not actually read much about this stuff at the moment, but I would have thought you could still override the system with a dab on the brakes, same as with cruise control?)
