But you can make adapters. The OP does not want one even though he has a lathe it sounds like he does not enjoy using it...

Maybe change the lathe? Seriously, some lathes are a joy to use whereas others are very frustrating.

I like using my lathe, Just don't get enough time to practice on it. The other set I managed to find were also solid dies, UK drills didn't have split dies on their website, But I found https://www.rennietool.co.uk ordered at three and just had an e-mail saying its been despatched for 3 quid

I have some rennie cobalt drills that seem decent. I've used them to drill everything from nylon and aluminium to en8 and en16 and they hold a decent tolerance, I would expect the dies to be similar quality

I've just today done a similar job, turning down a 16mm toolpost stud and threading m10. Used a 'crappy' Clarke die from a set I bought quite a few years ago on a vat free day. Never had a problem using any of the taps nor dies.

This, though on my Harrison, I don't bother with a chuck or anything else in the tail stock as it's an nice size for this job.
