Hi all. I'm fixing something. Got to put a 5mm thread onto a bar at one end, and a 6mm thread on the other end. Had to buy a set as I hadn't got a 5mm die. Turned the end of a 6mm bar to 5mm, slight chamfer on the end, It just won't bit and start to cut. I'm obviously doing something wrong. Any ideas to help please. I'm usually threading holes, and that's way easier

yes a little Chester conquest. I'm only cutting mild steel cold rolled bar. I've even gone all technical and uses a Vernier gauge to check I turned it to the right diameter. Chamfer is towards the job and I've put some tallow on it as a cutting medium
it is a split die. Like i said, I very rarely use them. I wondered why there were loads of screws on the holder. @Morrisman are you doing anything on Monday?

can you lock the spindle? or jam the die stock handle against something?
i usually press the tailstock against the die stock and lock the spindle, then turn the die while keeping weight on with the tail stock...
that said, i have also had a fair few die sets that havent been worth a sniff from the likes of tool station, screwfix and b&q...either wouldnt cut or blunt after 1 use

What dies are they? Poor quality dies are better suited to the bin.
Similarly, good quality carbon steel dies, wear out quite fast and will be instantly blunted if you try to chase a HT bolt or anything chromed. You can get away with grinding the gullet to resharpen a few times but then they too are for the bin.
ArcEuro were selling good quality HSS dies recently.
Mild steel can be awful, the lack of carbon gives an uneven structure with hard spots and gummy bits. I always prefer to work with a soft, medium carbon steel. En16/606m36 is a favorite.

In the interests of transparency, I've just sent a DM describing this very practise to @bourbon .I refrained from posting it here as I thought it may have been frowned upon. Seems not
i was taught this process by a tool maker when i was an apprentice. the one lathe had a spindle lock so we would lock it, then use the die stock, the smaller lathe didnt have a spindle lock so we sould stick the die stock against the tool post and then turn the chuck by hand.
also, ill tell people how i do it whether its frowned upon or not...i cant see the frowns thorugh the screen
Or you can use the end of a drill chuck (in the tailstock) with the jaws wound back so the die stock bears on the face of it.

you can, but i dont like putting that sort of load on the drill chuck...mine atleast would be pushing back on the barrel of the chuck which is a force it wouldnt ordinarilly see...i use a live centre when using taps that have a centre mark in them

im not sure, i was technically agency although sole contract, but i used to have to go about getting the discount in a long winded manner becasue we werent allowed cards...my father in law used to get about 20% when he worked in a different store

i was going to ask what sort of size the part was, i assume its a rod that runs through the handle to hole the handle together?
