I bought a gravel bike in November to coincide with my 39th birthday, this was in no way a mid life crisis starting

I have been modifying and playing ever since but have never really been happy with the gears, so decided to upgrade.

Took the rear mech off, to find the threads absolutely ruined, someone has just whacked them in without a care.

Not happy as a new part us £24, tried running a tap through but can't save enough of the thread. Bike shop not interested and are basically saying I probably did it

Can you helicoil it ? I have various kits but mine are all imperial threads so I probably cannot assist.

What size is the thread? if i have it here then i can send you my kit to use and just send it back when done..saves buying a kit for 1 coil

Those mech hangers are cheap as chips, easiest to get a new one

They make them out of the softest metal they can, so that if you have a crash and it pulls the mech off, the bit that breaks is the cheap hanger and not the expensive mech

Bike shops are like that. I got an "ex display" bike in 2010, frame looked ok, (and a lot worse now), but the gears were ruined, bottom bracket thread ruined, fun when that needed changing, all bearings gone so needed new wheels too.

Problem now is with front gear shifter, its never had enough travel to shift up the biggest cog smoothly but adjustments mess with the other cogs. Ive resorted to reaching down and yanking the cable.
Replacement shifters, Im told are not an option. Its a 3x8 setup.

Got fed up looking for a decent rear light, so Ive ordered a motorcycle rear led light and I'll use a 12v tool pack to power it.

Last, I bought a decent rack a year ago as Im often carrying heavy stuff. Cant find any decent bags. I'll likely get a motorcycle tail pack.

I've ordered a UK one but my helicoil this one and keep it in my spares box

Would be stronger than the original then.
But as said above, might be supposed to be a weak link?

Or, use a longer bolt and put a nut behind it.

Or, bodge it by counterboring the back of it and putting a rivnut in.

The Helicoil will be much stronger than the original. I'd use the repaired one. The new one is likely to be just as cheap and nasty.

Silly question but is the cable routed right at the Derailier end. If it's a Shimano triple they don't look right if they're correctly fitted. (I'll get you a picture later).

They are designed to snap in half rather than pull the threads out, I wouldn't be bothered about strengthening the threads.

But as said the best option is just to replace

I wouldn't have an issue with helicoiling it, they're only designed to bend to stop you bending the frame dropouts, it wouldn't ever see loading in a way that might cause the thread to fail, so a stronger thread won't do any harm.
EDIT: Grr beat me to it Fred.

I'm sure the last time I bought one it was only about a fiver, 24 quid is taking a pee a bit. I'd probably have a rummage for a bit of aluminium and make my own for that price.

Are you thinking about the ones that loop round under the seat tube clamp, then go back up to the mech? If so yep they do look odd

It's an odd shape and the other half is the captive nut for the thru axle, this is quite precise to make it all line up

It's CNC machined, that must be the addition £19 (we need an eye rolling smilie)
