Ah yes, the middle box... I kept an eye out for the full stack deal for ages a couple of years back, and eventually got one. Unfortunately I'm not sure if the middle box is an improvement because of the issue you mentioned

The main reason i never went for the middle box was the not being able to see into the top of the lift up box or into the top drawers...I think my Hobbit DNA was the real issue
My problem is the middle stack never have a dummy draw or no draw at the bottom.
This means anything you put on the bottom box in the space has to be moved to get at anything in the bottom draw, middle stack.
Which is always the case. Lol

My top box is about an inch smaller than than the middle and lower boxes, other than nuts and bolts about the only thing I can get on the flat space is my Titanium pinch bar.
Re the height, without the middle box I found the open top box a nuisance for storing tools as it suffers from flat surface syndrome and collects junk! I’m toying with the idea of using the top as a shelf for my cordless tools with the chargers and gloves which would free up a shelf over my bench.
The upper drawers that are now not so easy to see in will likely get the lesser used tools and free up some space lower down so not all bad or any need to lose the castors and reduce height.
A friend was using my tools today and I noticed he was quite happy to open 3 or more drawers at a time so I’m going to add a couple of straps at the rear to secure the boxes to each other and a security chain as the lack of an anti-tilt mechanism has always been a worry.
When I tried lifting the top box full of tools the handles were blatantly not going to be capable of lifting without removing weight, luckily the drawers are easy to remove in seconds. Makes you realise how easily a lapse might topple the stack.
