It's only in Cannock so it's very close to me . I guess I don't run freenas with this. It seems to say it runs windows 98. Cant find if it's complete with processor and how much ram it has but I guess a phone call solve that question.

UKRacer I have rehomed stuff out of knowing what they cost new, guilty of that one as charged myself.
I powered down a 1950 dell last week because its motherboard got sick and the sas controller started to act up (not sure dell qualifies as enterprise grade either mind) and its the fourth one in two years to go that way so now its insides are going into a corporate disposal HP XW6600 workstation, 100 quid ordered barebones from bargin hardware with no ram/cpu, dual xeon E5450's and 32Gb of ram out the dying dell, ssd drive, gtx760 out the stash cupboard, recycle the watercooling setup from the pc it will replace to cut down on office noise and for the hundred quid spent while it won't be bleeding edge or much of a match for anything but a low end i5 in performance, it'll be a lot more fun and useful as a 100 quid cad workstation etc than having a 1950 in the rack and it'll probably get left on 24/7 just the same as itll be quiet. Just my unprofessional opinion.
I like the little buffalo nas boxes as a throw on and do a job type box too. Theyre not windows inside if thats what you are refering to, but even if they were, they support nfs or smb out the box, so thats all your windows/linux/solaris etc needs covered so why worry about what os is inside?

They list that linked device as a TerastationIII device, which has a ARM9 cpu inside which a quick google leads you here :-

If you read that forum, there's instructions on how to root it etc which mean its not running windows.

The fact that its running telnetd from /usr/sbin is another extremely strong indicator that its not windows. I suspect it'll be some variant of embedded arm linux on it rather than anything else because thats the easiest platform for oems to develop on. Often they dont say whats inside because they have licensing violations they'd like to not acknowledge openly until forced to in a court.

Generally things mention windows in the blub because 99% of the home users want a "windows" compatible nas server, which as this speaks smb out the box it will be, they don't care what os is running the hardware underneath and all around us we're surrounded by embedded linux devices but because they don't have some sticker saying "linux inside" or fancy logo's we tend to not think about it.

But, you need a nas, its a nas, why are you bothering about getting root on it or what os is inside it? do you want to expand its job from beyond being just a NAS into a server or something?

I was a little concerned about me wanting to root it until I realised what you meant....although I don't really know what that is. so no I don't want to root it either way. I would be happy with buying it and a couple of 3tbt WD red drives and using it for a while while learn what it is and what is doing..

True, but you seemed to be generalising all servers as the above.

The buffalo will need a little setting up, but they are not that complicated. Dont need to worry about installing operating systems or installing Ram/CPU's they are built to NAS devices and not much more. If you can find a user manual on the buffalo site for one, have a read before you start to do anything.

My IT guy at work just set me up with a Synology 2 disk station. It's got 2x 3tb WD RED drives and it's very good on the software once set up (I'm clueless in this regard) but there are apps on my phone now for video/photo/music/file sharing and I can access 2 security cameras on a remote property, shed, garage, business home etc with the option to add more.
I'm getting into digital photography so I wanted something to store all the photos and collection of music that's building up and slowing down all my devices.
From what I understand a lot of these disk stations are similar in storage/spec but what separates them is the download/upload speed when trying to access your files remotely and the hard drives software which on the Synology is very good.

I meant red drives as well Jim I have corrected it now
