as goes for your internet side of it unless you have other access tools to test the net side other than the faulty pc you cant blame the net/router

I do have other tools. It was just that I wanted to use my laptop quickly. I wanted to use it today anyway as it has laser software on it.

there has been an intermittent issue as its been playing on and off over the weekend

in all of what you've said by the read up its a windows 10 issue

i suspect it was a number of issues.

This was flatly refuted by virgin. It was not until i got to level 2 techs that miraculously 5 mins later it all burst back into life.

I can say i have never (knowingly )had this problem before.

you claim to be paranoid but you leave your pc on overnight and let it sleep until morning and restart with already opened tabs

Done it for years as i used to run a mail server. I also needed to access it remotely often.

put it this way if you had a virus on your system you could be taken over while you slept and you wouldnt even know

windows 10 is the same thing it could have restarted on you with a new update and you havent got a clue that its been done as you wasnt up havent seen it installed

I have all my machines to ask before updating.

windows antivirus and firewall was poor years ago, i wouldnt trust windows 10 firewall/antivirus as id rather have my own that i trust far better

Missus said while i was out moting the car that the PC's playing up, i opened ccleaner and checked the latest installs by Microsoft, 21st was 2 Microsoft edge2 ? and Microsoft store ? I'm not sure that they were at fault, but it something to consider

bad failed gear poor temporay repairs

Title says it all. It all started with my router having a dodgy switch so I used bluetack to keep it on for a while now.
With the heat the bluetack failed a number of time so I glued the switch in place with a little 3d printed top hat.
I seemed to have no Internet connection so I just started at the Hub (it's in modem.mode) and worked my way through and without me actually fixing it manually it sprang back into life.

a wireless connection i wouldnt use as the laptop wireless side can be faulty a direct connection would be better

ive seen vm no net connection ive even had to restart my modem but i do give it all day

ive had to phone them as it hasnt come back on and theyve had to reset again for it to come back so have had that issue myself its like the net is there but its not

a reset has reset the modem and net comes back on again

done it for years well you havent had windows 10 for years as its a newish install so that comment cant be used and bad habbits are not that good

ive run 24/7 for a full year no shutdown but ive had to use a memory program to claw back and refresh the memory again due to im a very heavy user

even ive had to restart my machine often as that program no longer works and windows has never sorted out its memory bleed on its software

you can set windows 10 to ask but it can still update on you, as it does have a time to force the update on you. best to check your settings as i locked mine out from doing so

there was no updates allowed unless i allowed them and you need other software to lock windows 10 from updating

windows 10 defender and antivirus is difficult to remove and lock you also need to install other software to so it can be locked and you also need to go elsewhere to change it otherwise windows 10 firewall and anitvirus comes back on

using 2 firewalls and antiviruses programs can make your machine vulnerable

windows 10 update can turn things back on meaning you have to go through all of it once again per update to turn back all off

Trying a different router might perhaps help. It could be the NAT, or some other aspect of the router's functioning that has become corrupt.

Ah I see. A switch that won't stop on is not a big issue. I never use switches on the router anyway. I pull the plug.

The real.kicker was that it seems windows on the PC was compromised in some way. I am sure you are aware you can get a "feeling" something is amiss but can't put your finger on it..when I selected "power" tab the option to switch off restart etc did not appear. Settings were the same.

Strangely it seemed it was an OS issue but in reality is no longer a problem since the Internet was restored. I can't see how or why as Windows works fine without Internet.

but it as I say I had never seen the pages/sites disappearing as soon as you clicked on them but reappearing when you mouse overfed the url again.

In my area there not that bad. I have been with then for 25 years. Its only the last 4 or 5 that the techs have been harder to get at.

bt is far worse for those stuck with them

poor service and they throttle like hell they also lie through there adverts and there speeds is not like virgin

bts had the time to upgrade its networks for years to fibre it put profits first instead of its network might not have been the same down where you are

put it this way would you like being stuck with 2-6 meg unless its a heavily used service then you all get throttled down so the system can cope all because they wouldnt upgrade there own service, instead they paid there shareholders

It must vary with location, in Birmingham you see a lot of "anyone else's Virgin down?" and "I'm having problems with my Virgin internet" type posts but little or no complaints about BT.
Maybe all the BT lines are down so they can't post about any problems

Microsoft are always doing things without telling you if you have updates enabled.

On a number of occasions they messed up my ability to access remote sites because they'd change the installed versions of things to "latest version" and break things for me by doing so

BT is the only internet available in my little hamlet, so I'm stuck with them. Their service has gone from £29 a month to £37 in the 3 years since I signed up with them.

I'm not sure if the 'dongle' type internet would be any better, or cheaper, but BT seems to do the job, very few issues or slow days.

Interesting problem with my laptop today. Nothing will run as an administrator unless I go into safemode.
Anyone had this issue before. so many suggestions and variations on the net but nothing has worked yet.

This really is a confusing problem.
I did not have a means of saving files from the laptop which was running an upgrade from Windows 7 to Windows 10 Home.

So in desperation I decided to use the disc I have (Windows 10 Proffessional)
Very weirdly although it installed with no problem it still had the same issue.
Starts to boot but stops half way through the windows tune.

When it does this it often fails to join. Randomly it does boot but there is no Windows search facility, there is also the same problem I needed to reinstall Windows in that I can not run anything as an administrator.

Anyone had this before?

how old is your hard drive

only a faulty disc, hard drive and bios can stop an install of an operating system

most users use a usb stick to install as its easier and faster to install

It hasn't stopped the install.
It actually installed as confirmed by speccy.
It installed BUT it did not change the outcome. This is what I find most intriguing. Being unable to run anything as administrator usually indicates malware. But anything I did shows no sign of malware or similar.

As time went on it started to fail to boot unless I went into safemode.

I just popped out and grabbed a 2tb drive as the 256 micro SD and SD flash drives were similar money.

Currently copying anything I might need from the laptop and going for a format and fresh install of Windows 10 Pro. I was just more intrigued than anything.

i upgraded x3 to the lexar 512 ssd for the main programs

then i bought the 4tb as its was only 12.00 higher than the 2tb hard drive price as i use them as back up usage

I didn't have much choice . I am now out in the sticks with Argos as the closest technical shop ( and that's miles away)
So all I want it for is to save data off the laptop as laptop already has 500 gig SSD in it.

I did have a desktop do all manner of strange things...that turned out to be a failing motherboard. It would often fail to boot...or just randomly shut down.

The admin thing is a bit odd though....I've had many failed SSDs ....but they tend to just shrink over time and then eventually have boot issues....but that's a bit different.
