Gys Smartmig 162 control PCB fuse rating?

Hi all,

I bought the above faulty mig from ebay. I know, I should know better!

Anyway, upon dismantling it I found several blown 1A fuses floating around inside. The fuse holder on the control pcb is empty and the small transformer has an o/c primary winding. While I'm waiting for a replacement transformer to arrive, I was wondering whether anyone is able to confirm that 1A is the correct fuse rating, I assume it's a slo-blow? I expected it to be printed on the pcb, but it isn't!

Also I've found a wiring diagram for the welder, but if anyone has a circuit diagram for the pcb that would be really helpful too!

Hi everyone !

Long story short : I think got screwed over in buying a second hand GYS Smartmig 162 that doesn't seems to work.

I did put some wire in it and tried to weld, nothing happens. The fan spins and the wire feeder works if I press the trigger though. I even tried to put the wire directly on the ground clamp, still nothing.

I've taken it apart, nothing seems visually broken, nothing burnt, nothing melted.

My stick welder makes a buzzing sound when on, is the MIG also supposed to do that ? I'm looking for some help to check what is the part(s) that are faulty. The board ? The...

Hey all,

just putting this here in case any members here have a question about this welder, i might be of help.

Disclaimer: this is my first welder and i have next te zero welding experience

Perhaps the primary of the notoriously unreliable small potted transformer initially went short, and then after numerous replacements of the fuse, it was burnt open-circuit. If so, then a new transformer and a final new fuse may be all it takes to fix the welder.....
These PCB-mounted transformers are usually rated at 2 or 3 VA ( ~ Watts ), so if the fuse is in the mains feed to the primary of that transformer, then 1A is more than adequate. However, it would be a good idea to check the wiring and the PCB tracks to confirm that that is its function.

It only needed the transformer!

I found Switch Electronics on ebay, who have the original transformer and a higher rated one which is 2.3va. I went for the bigger one.

As for the fuse, I measured the current to the board while using the welder and it came in at around 100ma, so I've opted for a 500ma time lag fuse. If it fails in use I'll up the rating to 630ma or possibly 1a.

Finally, the wiring to the max/min and a/b switches had also been 'played' with. Eventually I got them sorted, giving the following open circuit voltages at the torch:-

Min A = 24v
Min B = 28v
Max A = 31v
Max B = 38v

Which is close enough to the 25.5 to 40v quoted by Gys.

I've has time to play (test!!) it today, turns out it's a nice little welder.
