GYS 162 or 142

Only going to be used for car repairs, but unsure which machine?

read a lot of good things about the GYS 162

i looked heavily into the 162 and i cant see anything wrong with it really, the 142 is probably fine but the 162 is still cheap for a mig and has a good rep, plus that little bit more grunt for anything that might need it...

planning on just doing body work is fine until you need to weld up something like a bracket or repair a chassis rail

IMO the 162 is a better choice, has 30A low end rather than 40 and the euro torch too. Better if you ever need to replace your torch.

Is it not very good on the thicker stuff then? Might have to do some chassis repairs as well as general bodywork

the 162 will be better than the 142 on thicker stuff because it has more amps to give...rule of thumb is 1 thouh of thickness needs 1 amp, so the 160 theretically can weld 4mm at full whack, the 142 would still be capable of 3.5mm but the duty cycle would also suffer on a smaller unit.

162. Better amps range, but as Tom says has the euro torch.With a euro torch you can:

easily change to a longer torch-handy for car body work
easily sort out liner probs- sometimes when loading a spool, the wire digs in tween the liner, ezy answer is unscrew euro torch and jiggle wire into liner, sometimes need to pull liner right out and feed it back in-the GYS wire feed motors have a lot of poke, they can shove liners up the torch
easy to change liners
easy to put teflon liner in the original shorter torch for ali
easy to change between torches-ie short /medium/long.

What's the difference in price between them?
It's all very well saying 3/4 mm will be the max you will go to but doing it regularly or for long runs you'll be battering its duty cycle.
If I was looking for a machine capable of welding 3-4mm Properly id buy one that could weld it comfortably but had the capacity to weld 5 at max amps.

Also, some joints/jobs in 3/4mm might max out the 142. Sometimes, depending on what you are welding, there might be a heat sink that robs juice and you need to amp up. The 162 will give you a cushion, plus if the 142s min is 40A against the 162s 30A, the 162 is the kiddy I'd go for in your case.
The 142 would quite possibly handle it as the GYS kit seems to put out the amps that they say on the tin, but always best to have spare capacity.
