I thought I'd read somewhere that if you use brake cleaner to clean stuff you're gonna weld, it leaves a slight residue which gives off a nasty toxic gas when welded?

My saga continues......
I have a friend who is a jeweler and has a thermostatic furnace. I asked him to chuck the sump into the furnace for an hour and a half at 100 degrees, which was its lowest setting apparently.
Rather than launching straight at it this time I thought I'd just light up on a bit that doesn't matter. I lowered the frequency and cleaning and started really slowly. Initially the first grains of the puddle forming looked ok but as I added more heat the puddle filled up with black specs and a nasty mess ensued. I reheated it and added a dab of filler just to see if the good metal in the filler could dilute the grotty stuff a bit, but it seemed to make very little difference.
The possibility exists that my friends furnace, which I think he said goes up to 1000 degrees? might not work well at the very bottom end of its temperature envelope but that's just guess on my part.
I should also add that I bought the engine new from a brand new unused bike and once in the car has only done about 200 miles. Because of its position in the car, it's somewhat protected and was very clean before I set about it.
I've attached a piccie in case there is anything y'all might be able to tell from it.
Any thoughts kindly received.

Wouldn’t cost much to post about.
I was going to offer to do it for him myself but tbh he’d probably get it done a chunk quicker if you did it.
You need to be careful with any chlorinated solvent, the high energy of the arc or combustion initiated by the arc/heat in the presence of carbon, oxygen, and chlorine (a chlorinated brake cleaner provides the carbon and chlorine) runs the risk of generating phosgene (COCl2) which is toxic and has been used as a chemical weapon.I thought I'd read somewhere that if you use brake cleaner to clean stuff you're gonna weld, it leaves a slight residue which gives off a nasty toxic gas when welded?

Using acetone or isopropyl alcohol avoids this risk and are not too expensive.

It's the UV light, and why methylene chloride and paint stripper come in dark or metal containers - horrible stuff, lots of reports of welders having life-changing lung injuries or deaths in the USA... and my grandad was gassed with it in WW1, didn't stop him smoking or winning a George Medal in the ARP though!

My mate asked me to weld some hub adapters onto cast ally scooter wheels for his pit bike racer. Two identical wheels, one made in Italy, the other in China. The Italian one welded fine but the Chinese one was an utter nightmare to weld.

Seen that loads of times. Two identical parts yet the weld ability couldn’t be any further apart.
I wasn't aware of the UV being involved, thanks for the info.

Guys,
Your offers of help are remarkably kind, especially since I'm not even a major contributor here. I'd feel like a failure having one of you kind souls bail me out but I also feel like I've exhausted nearly all of my options. The one last thing I was going to try was to heat it in the oven, slightly hotter and for a couple of hours or so, just thinking back at the tip that I cut off and was able to weld after almost melting it with a propane torch.

I'd be happy to pay the carriage both ways if you wanted to take a gander at it and make a video. I'd also like to try what I mentioned above first so long as you don't think I'd make what you might ultimately do, more difficult.
The other thing about having a pro look at it is at least I'd know either way whether it was all my fault or if some of it could be because of the part.
When I was first learning, a major issue I had was as a result of a rubbish torch (not the R-Tech one, that was fine but too bulky) but I was convinced it was because of something I was doing wrong. I tried loads of different things but nothing helped. I bought a CK and instantly everything worked fine.....

Sorry for the delayed reply, hectic life at the minute.
I wasn't gonna hit it with the torch again, maybe just try it in the oven.
I'll do as you request if I do send it down and I'd expect that a little distortion probably won't matter since there are so many fixing bolts.
