Grand Cherokee Overland or late Discovery 4 or 5?

In six months, the lease on out Mitsubishi Overland PHEV runs out as does our patience with electric vehicles. It’s back to diesels here even though we have a 10KW solar array on our barn roof.

We just can’t manage without a car rated to tow 3.5 tonnes… there’s a limit how far you want to go on a tractor.

So we’ve had loads of success with couple of years old low mileage Jeepies in the past and they are very well equipped and great value for money, but were just wondering about a late Discovery 4 or 5 for a change - just not sure how good an idea it is.

Any thoughts please?

L322 4.4 TDV8, I have become quite besotted with my 4.2 Supercharged. Make sure its got the rear locking diff if you want to offroad it. Part of the reason I got the 2007 SC as they are standard but options on others.

The issue with the d4 is they snap cranks for fun on the tdv6 3.0l, also have oil pump issues, both connected I suspect. Other than that I'd have one. Parents have a d3, and I have an fl2.

I thought that was the D3 mainly?

Mum has the Jeep and we have the D3 (and a D2 and Defender). The d3 is fine, seats could be comfier, it feels bigger than the Jeep but isnt really. They are both nice, Jeep has more power I think (its a merc V6 I beleive) and of the two, the Jeep has needed less maintenance but it is the newer vehicle.

For towing, I think the D3/4 would be better as it is the heavier vehicle and more setup for it, but I do reckon maintenance costs will be more (although neither will be cheap if they go wrong as they are both complex vehicles)

There may be internet 'reports' along those lines, the reality is that the two issues are not connected and affect less than 3% of TDV6 3.0l engines. Most cases of crank issues have been identified as being due to incorrect oil spec, aftermarket tuning or extended service interval, the rest are QC issues related to the flexplate mounting holes. The oil pump issue (also applies to 2.7l TDV6), reported as 'poor design' is actually due to over-torquing the timing belt tensioner mounted on the oil pump, there is a modified oil pump available, should you feel the need to apply excessive torque to the timing belt tensioner.

Oh and the D5 is just fugly.... a far different beast in utility terms to the D3/4 with even more complex electronics... personally I wouldnt touch one on looks alone..

Fully agree with the looks - most of the 'electronics' issues are down to emissions control, something all marques are struggling with TBH, there have been a few OTA update concerns but these were all early life and the platform is quite stable now, software-wise.

What @Ubique said, oil pump and crank issue is not related

Oil pump issue was also more prevelant on the 07 D3 as a different design was used, earlier and later had bigger webs supporting the nose

Not had a D4 but have had a D3 and Jeep GC with the 5cyl Merc engine

Would have to be a D4 for me, have tried out the V6 GC and yes if hoofs along but the Disco was a much better load lugger and towing machine

My wife has the Mitsi diesel and as Parm says it's ok as a Chelsea tractor but she had to borrow my Toyota Surf this morning to get my son's mountain bike in!

Active rear differential was always a build request, never a specification build include, your dealer may well have spec'ed a few - or one, but it was never 'standard'.

From my research its standard on the supercharged, mine certainly has it.

Much as I like discoveries Id not own one unless it was under warrenty. Our next door neighbour has had two and had a succession of electrical / electronic issues.....with suitable bills to match.

To tow 3.5 ton buy a pick up new for the same money as a decent disco. Not as refined but far less hassel.
