The issue with the d4 is they snap cranks for fun on the tdv6 3.0l, also have oil pump issues, both connected I suspect. Other than that I'd have one. Parents have a d3, and I have an fl2.

Same engine as the jag XF? Loads on ebay, engine dead...

Yes I did go Jap, the thing is going very soon and I cannot wait to jump back in a land rover, I will drive it while I do my job for a proper British manufacturer, one that will be a household name soon

I have always bought British cars whenever I can. My first car was an SD1 that did me 150,000 miles and was totally reliable.
I had a Rover 400 with the British diesel engine - lovely car did me 175,000 miles - only problem was a snapped spring in the clutch plate.
I have had several Range Rovers and Discoveries along with a 110. Again never any trouble.
My brother bought an Audi A5 tfsi - dodgy piston rings had a new rebuilt engine from audi at a cost of £8000!
ALL cars have problems these days - way too much technology means far more to go wrong. The roads are a very harsh environment - especially in the British climate.

Not personally owned a D4 or D5 but had a pair of L322s with TDV8s and you're very unlikely to come across a better tow vehicle. Couldn't stand the appearance of a D5 and I've heard of more issues with the TDV6 than the TDV8.

Had a 3.6 for 6 years and was an amazing tow vehicle, a friend had a top of the range Disco 4 and subsequently 5 at the time and said the interior of the L322 was much more comfortable. A few months ago picked up a 4.4TDV8 L322 and it's even more of a refined beast than the 3.6. Towed down to Cornwall from West Wales and got 30mpg, cruising at the limit normally doing about 35mpg. Had a few friends who've had the more modern (equivalent in age) to the L322s and you've got to be careful on which model you pick to get the 3.5t tow capability. They're "generally" more reliable but when they go wrong they're even more difficult and expensive to fix than the Range Rovers.

Another point is if you do your research and not put off by a higher mileage vehicle you can get a hell of a lot of car for not much. My 2011 TDV8 I've currently got had just crossed 125k but with full JLR service history and not a penny spared on it for £12.5k when you bear in mind that it was a £70-80k car a short while ago.

As with all vehicles I beleive the biggest issue is that some owners scrimp on maintenanc, miss services, fit inferior parts etc, then make a huge noise about how unreliable the vehicle is.
these are probably the same ones that buy performance bmw and audi etc and fit budget tyres

It amazes me - especially with many ladies - that they will happily pay £200 for a pair of shoes but will complain at spending £50 on a new tyre

I’ll still argue that 99% of reliability issues with old skool landies is down to people thinking they never need maintenance. My 300tdi did 1000 mile round trip on 3 cylinders. Not as well as it would have on 4, admittedly, but it carried on when most other stuff would have packed up. The cause? This clown screwing the pump out a little too much and melting a piston.
The newer stuff hasn’t got the same level of quality or fix ability but for the most part still do the job well, if not a touch expensive

Loved my TD5, de cat and mostly straight through pipe, with a tiny back box

Other than the fan belt tensioner letting go, after some unexpectedly deep water crossings it was incredibly reliable

Yes had my Discovery decatted, centre box removed and just the small rear silencer it had quite a bark. It had been chipped and was quick and powerful but had an appetite for exhaust manifolds which it liked to warp.

Same here, although mine had a bigger intercooler and the Bell Auto VGT turbo, El rapido for a big 4x4

Also had the infamous warped manifold more than once, finally sorted with dewebbing, skimmed and better quality studs, nuts plus some hi temp RTV

When I wanted a replacement for my 170,000 mile MGZT 190, I looked at the Audi offerings - anything over 2l effectively meant the v6 tfsi. But reading of the horrors with oil burning engines and the maker denying an issue put me right off.
Bought a 90,000 mile Jag XF v6.
The radiator failed is the only issue so far. Fingers crossed

I actually machined one of these flat for a neighbour. It warped again aparently...

Mine did 400 miles towing a Bridgeport with a snapped crankshaft.

The general consensus was once it was warped with heat then machined flat again it wouldn't warp any further. My 3rd and last manifold was such.
