Good Pillar Drill

Best place to get a used pillar drill (preferably floor standing), single or 3 phase.

Looking to get an older quality drill... anyone know of a good machinery company that sell them. Seen all the usual sites on Google but do not seem to stock much.

Ebay is where I got mine, as the industrial quality ones are so heavy they are normally collect only. There's also the home workshop classified advert website. You just have to wait for one to appear somewhere close enough for it to be worth travelling to collect. Might be worth ringing round scrapyards in your area; the one nearest me often has odd bits of machinery that's been weighed in that they hang on to for a bit in case they can flog it again for more money.

The machinery dealers aren't really interested in pillar drills as there's not much margin in them before the price becomes silly and it sticks to the warehouse floor, except maybe on fancier machines like backgeared, gearhead or radial arm drills.

Thanks penfold checked the home workshop and seen an advert and went to the sellers website and seen a good drill £150 and they can deliver on a pallet, Just emailed them to find out the price of delivery.

Minimum speed's a bit high, but a nice solid bit of kit nonetheless. What are you going to be using it for? If you're likely to be drilling big holes in metal you really need slower speeds; either the drill you've linked to combined with an inverter, or perhaps opt for one of the Elliot Progress instead?

mostly 12mm & 14mm on 12mm flat bar, however sizes may vary and would be an advantage to have the lower speed.

Those sizes really need the slower speed; the union will drill the hole but you'll wear out your drills quicker.

wow thats a big thread, thanks for that. Got an email back saying the union has an 1mt taper for the larger 1mt drills but the elliot has a fixed chuck. Suppose the 1mt on the higher speed union would be no use with larger drills....?

suppose it may be better to have the fixed chuck with the lower speed, rather than a higher speed drill.

You can get a chuck with a 1MT fitting on it so you can take a whole load of drills.

My Elliott has 2MT fitting and I've got a 16mm chuck with a 2MT to fit it.

The other option i had is the axminster drill, has a speed range between
150-2,700 rpm 230V 1ph, 75-2,700 rpm 415V 3ph

I am just wondering if this machine is worth the £580, if it means i dont need to upgrade at a later date.

TBH I dont know much about drills, according to this website it has an mt4... my welding career has been mostly confined to a booth and rarely used the drills and dont have that much of an understanding in the various mt sizes.

MT4 is HUGE, and would allow the use of HUGE drills, like 2" or something silly like that. For hobby use, I'd pick the Progress as it's of more practical use; the versatility of the MT1 spindle on the Union is mostly wasted as you can't get low enough speeds to use really big drills.

There's the other favourites such as Startrite and Meddings. I get the impression Axminster is a bit like Machine Mart, and I would buy a used professional drill over a Clarke any day.

yes looking online the mt4 is big, rtbcomp i have never known what to make of the axminster stuff. have heard some good reviews on the own branded stuff.

You are right spending the money on a good quality used machine, that much of a choice.

with penfolds advice about the low speed and the advice on the taper sizes has narrowed my search.

No problem with Barry or Andrew, have had a few pillar drills in recently, been in business many many year, nice tidy organized retail unit and will sticks tuff on a pallet for you, sadly s/h school stuff is drying up and good named s/h stuff becoming rarer. Used him several times, fair prices for a trader.

i got an atlas drill press for £40 on ebay last year and not long after i saw one for twenty odd quid (i can't help meself but keep looking even when i've bought). as someone above says, they're usually 'collect only' so prices vary massively. do make sure it takes an MT chuck or quill though if you want a good bit of versatility.

I got mine on Ebay for £35 and spent £40 in fuel fetching it! bought from some madman in Falkirk with an even more cluttered garage than me; removing the drill allowed you to step over the threshold of the up&over door but you could go no further, it was stuffed to the rafters.

Does tend to negate the bargain somewhat when you add the fuel, doesn't it. Not usually much choice though. Local folk this way seem to hate parting with their kit. I usually always end up in either Nottingham, Norfolk or North Yorkshire when collecting stuff, for some strange reason, but ne'er local.
