sounds like head gaskets gone to me between pots and a oil way pressurising engine
Seems like not as much escaped as it looked like...black slippy oil = lots of mess.

Update...the oil is coming from a poor seal on top of the valve cover...it's a rubber bung that allows cable to pass through...
Finally managed to get hold of a compression gauge and the news so far is that cylinders 1,3 and 4 are giving reading of around 210-220 after 5 cycles...cylinder 2 however is only showing 90-100 after 12 cycles...
This was only a dry test as the bloke lending me the gauge is a bit odd and as soon as I had done the dry tests he decided to go home again...
So...looks like the head Is coming off

I'm guessing the valves aren't sealing on No.2 allowing it to pressurise the valve cover and blow the oil out?

If that was the case it would blow into both manifolds and even if it did it would go straight into the inlet manifold through the crankcase ventilation system

That is the most likely scenario...
Most of what needs to come off Is now off...just 2 stubborn exhaust studs and then the cams need to come out. Letting the studs soak in some plus gas for the night now

Exhaust and inlet cam are separate...valve cover is basically 2 separate covers connected with a bit of plastic down the middle.
I've since noticed the oil isn't coming out from the afore mentioned bung, but it Is coming from the exhaust side so it must be pressure pushing it past the gasket

Yes, although upon starting the throttle body opens a bit anyway so it would still get air...all 4 cylinders were tested the same way and only no.2 was low

Gasket maybe but pushing that amount of pressure past valve stems no, they would have to be totally worn out

Either way it Is losing compression somewhere and as it's only the one cylinder to me that says exhaust valve so it's gotta come off anyway...will see what the valves look like Sunday when I get the head off...
Shopping trip to bath tomorrow on a coach so no work being done on the car til Sunday

Did you take the plugs out and compare the colours, it often gives an indication
