Terrible idea.

That's why they break off - years of people not changing them.

Replace the set.

Super idea with a three year old car - yes I agree with you 100%.

But all the ten year old - end of life - neglected vehicles I get to work on - I dare not write them off for snapping glowplugs on a whim.

There are plenty of mobile Brocken glow plug removal services should the need arise.

I Def agree with just the one that's off, needs changed as a faulty Glo plug will stop re gen

Wow 10 years is an old car nowadays. I guess abused will shorten the life of any car and maybe modern cars are less tolerable of that.

10yrs and 100k on the clock is end of life now for some of this modern neglected stuff with high distance service intervals.

You can be lucky and find a decent car that has been looked after. Had the oil changed with the right oil - but they few and far between...

I’m doomed I’ve just bought a 16 year Rav4 with 149000 on the clock. This one has a full service history and one owner, been well looked after till now!

Rav4 will be OK if it a petrol one and it don't need a clutch at 150k.

If it an auto - these suffer ECU control box problems for auto gearbox.

Transfer boxes fail on both manual and auto models - so changing the transfer box fluid would not hurt.


But is is a toyota - one of the last proper toyotas - so bets on you will get three years out of it..

My 17 year old 1.9 Diesel Megane automatic with 116000 on the clock started first time on Friday with temp at minus 7. Just as well as I had to take herself to a hospital appt! When I got back home,switched on the tv, there was immediately a cheery advert asking if you want to be burnt up when you die. I guess they have their target audience re older folk watching tv in the daytime!

Yeah but it's an older Toyota not a Fiat so you're ok.

They probably came in boxes of twenty, so they could get an extra vehicle out of every box.

Ten years is end of life ???? Just run in for me.

I was thinking which vehicles I’ve changed glow plugs on. Ford fiesta, Astra van, Golf, K74 L200 x 2. Astra van was the only one I had issues with, one of the plugs was under something else on the engine. Maybe a 4trak too

One was pretty much inaccessible and never got changed anyway. Funnily enough made no real difference to starting.

The TD5 would start in less than a turn, even in sub zero temps

I'd leave that alone!

Our D3 must have a couple out struggles a little to fire when really cold and white smoke briefly. As long as it still starts I won't be touching them. They snap for a past time. I'd rather do a remote fuel burning heater conversion on it than try and change the glow plugs tbh.

My 200tdi 110 is great. It starts in any weather without the plugs. I never wired them to a relay when I fitted the engine so unless I manually power them they dont come on. I never bother as it doesn't need them.

Even if they do snap it doesn't right away mean the head has to come off. There are ways to extract them. For me I'd first reach for the welder and get a grip on it that way or buy one of the engine specific drill removal kits and get it out that way.
