Glow Plugs

Missus has a T-Roc (2020) and a fault appeared, after reading it it is the glow plug on cylinder 1 Having volunteered to replace it (good excuse to buy a new torque wrench) which brand should I be looking at and do they need to be the "pressure sensor" type. I was planning on replacing all four. Or am I wasting money?

Ahh yes I see the confusion. I would buy a Norbar torque wrench but I have no idea what a "good" brand of Glow plug is.

For removing them I always do it on a fully hot engine. Don't let it cool down. Small impact gun turned down nice and low and work them out slowly. This normally always works well for me.

It's a good idea to also apply a small amount of ceramic glow plug grease to the shaft of the new ones to help prevent them seizing in the future.

I use genuine MB glow plugs for my cars. They are Beru plugs but I've had strange issues with Beru plugs before that was resolved by fitting genuine ones.... but for most cases you won't go wrong with genuine or the same OEM brand that the car came with such as Beru or Bosch etc

I would only replace the faulty one, they have a habit of snapping off in the head, replace three more than needed........ and be very careful not to apply any sideways pressure as I believe that is what snaps them off rather than the torque from undoing..

Either genuine, or a known brand from a reputable source.
Pressure sensor or not, simply depends on what is fitted, as you have to change like for like.

And as said, I'd only be changing the faulty one.

Drill what is left - then tap a thread in it - then extract using a tube extractor. Works 75% of the time (if not off with its head).

I bought into model specific Pichler kits for our workshop - not cheap - but we really do charge huge money to extract broken glowplugs - it is a time consuming job and costs a lot in broken tooling.

That really depends on how good the access is. I have a kit to remove broken glow plugs which works well IF the access is good . I have also had to drill out the remains of a couple but fortunately the head was off the engine before I even saw the van

Head off - it's spark eroder and just clean the threads up.

Would check the price of genuine glow plug to ngk also.
Sometimes you will be surprised how cheap vag group parts are.

Would only change the one at fault and confirm it's at fault with a simple resistance check first.

Terrible idea.

That's why they break off - years of people not changing them.

I’ve always changed them all, only because I was told if one has gone the rest won’t be far behind.
