Getting paid for youtube content

Ok so Ive been uploading random stuff on youtube (no not my feet , and not my voice cause I sound like fred dibnah, but who knows, he seemed to have a string of hangers on)
Mainly chickens, steam rally stuff, testing radios and old hi-fi gear, and there will be car stuff and mobile hf radio stuff to come.

Rather surprisingly there seem to be people out there who actually view it, like, and comment, not that Im bothered, and have got some subscribers.

Was idly wondering if it is worth signing up to monetarise it, there seem to be various options, and can I expect anything more than a couple of quid a month (it all ads up I suppose). I dont intend to become one of those people who record every farts end and aspect of their life, just wondering what if anything I could expect. ?

This guy @CaseyLaDelle has vocalised a few thoughts on the rewards, or not, of YouTube. I gather it depends on a nuiber of factors, not just how many Subscribers you have.

I think John aka Doubleboost is our most successful youtube creator and hopefully he'll give some insights, but I expect it comes down to two things:

1. (stating the obvious) make content that thousands of people want to watch
2. Spend a significant amount of time on the process

I've got 400 subscribers. That's taken probably 4 years to build with an odd video now and then.

Probably worth talking to @KimB, she gets a lot of hits on her videos. Perhaps becaise many are based on how to/instructional type content which people are always looking for. Maybe it's based on the funny memes/cutaways she inserts!

I‘m going to start posting on you tube, not, absolutely not! for the intensions of making any money or to get any subscriptions.
Purely because I’ve always since the start of forums (car forums) I’ve been very active with posting lots of content
But I’ve really noticed the tumbleweed in car forums from where it used to be, I can only think that people now have moved to you tube. So for that reason only I’m going to give it a go. I’ve a 1991 aircooled 911 which I’m about to start a full restoration on, and I think you tube might get some interest.

Don't think I will ever reach monetisation so well done with that. I have more video ideas than time to make videos

If I ever click on a utuber video that has more than 60 seconds of talking intro I switch it off, no offs or buts. Nobody wants to hear rhubarb rhubarb ad nausium. It’s nice that these videos exist, and there are real gems out there, but loads of drivel

Just checked some stats...

3340 subscribers
In the last 28 days, 21.9K views, 755 hours, £33.76 income.

The most I ever earned was roughly £90 in one month. It has been at present levels for quite a long time and I rarely ever post anything.

I did the grand total of 2 vids, purely for a bit of free advertising, and the possibility of getting a bit more serious when my hands are no longer able to sew.

Did I achieve anything? Surprisingly, yes, I do get the odd customer every year getting in touch to buy a rig because of watching my two feeble little vids. I think it depends on your commitment, and commitments.

Random anecdotes:

Decades ago No1 son put up a 30-second video showing how to release track rod end tapers using the old two hammers method. It was the easiest way to demonstrate it to a Forum.
Some years later an American parts dealer embedded it on his website as a 'how to' and my son earned a few pennies for the views it picked up there.

My wife was selling her knitting machines. They have electronic controls and these have embedded test programs to check everything is working correctly. We made short 2-3 minute videos showing these test programs to demonstrate the condition of the machines. We then embedded a link to them in the eBay listing.
She has around 200 'followers' worldwide for these and still gets a few views or comments per month nearly 3 years later!

No money though.

i think patron, coffee thing, ko-fi or similar is the way to go rather then ads, but you need a consistent output to build a viewer base willing to pay up for content

I sold it to start my business in march 2000 . I was talked into it by someone who wanted a cheap desperate subbyA decision that ruined my life financially and lost a car that is need a lottery win to get back!

I was just lucky, bought mine in 2008 when the prices were probably at their lowest, no way I could afford to buy one now. But then you could say the same about fast Fords from the past, if I’d kept my Mk 2 RS2000, Escort RS Turbo, Mk3 and 4 and Cosworths I could probably retire early.
If only crystal balls were a thing.
