German Guild Trousers

Looks to be just the job for welding/grinding. It was first developed in England for foundry workers, called "English Leather" further refined by zgermans, 100% cotton.

Bit weird with the two zips, but I’m willing to give them a go

Our welders at ICI were issued with similar material, Very tightly woven brushed cotton. A bit like moleskin trousers but much thicker, Jackets and trousers,

Just out of interest.. German carpenters/joiners who do a full, traditional apprenticeship have to make their own toolbox, and travel around by foot, carrying it like in olden days, asking for work when they pass through villages etc.
before they can be invited to be a member of their trade guild.

( I think that's where this company got their name?)

While doing this old-school work experience, they have to wear the clothing of an 18-century itinerant chippie.
You occasionally meet one over there, and they are keen to fix anything wooden.

A nice tradition, don't know if they still hold them to it, I hope so.

Carhartt Duck Twill work wear is also very good, not the fashion stuff we get here. I've got a couple of pairs of trousers that a I bought in the states. I wear them for best but they are so comfortable and durable.

If you watch any show filmed in the USA where people are working you will see the stuff everywhere. I was chatting to the guy in one of the places I bought mine in Anchorage and he'd had a guy come in the same week who was a contractor and had been wearing the same Carhartt jacket for 25 years!

I was going to buy Carhartt, but then remembered about these. Much heavier cotton 600g/sq m, plus the leather like finish, makes me think they’ll standup to more ab-use. I’m lefthanded so the grinder sparks eat my left trouser leg

You can get them on amazon. Eiko is another make.

Hey, if you look at movies like pride and predudice, Colin Firth had trowsers with a big flap in the front, the style of those days. No zips, just buttons.
