Are they AC or DC? Are there chinese ones at good prices now? I have only used knacked old sets on ships, never bought one myself.
They are available in AC and DC welding output. Some only have dc auxiliary output on them and are therefore no good for powering tools with a speed control/soft start. Some are known for being unreliable such as very old Arcgen 150 weldmakers, MOSA 150 and TS200 machines are also ones I'd avoid secondhand and only want to own during a warranty.
Anything with a Sincro generator on it (SIP alleycat) Harrington Generators International (HGI) is a pretty safe bet but I'd opt for the DC welding output models (EW200DC) as they have a nicer welding output and 2.2kW of 110 and 4kW of 230v output. I've run them on the rental fleet for years and fixed a lot of other stuff that has been bought, used, died and been replaced 2 or 3 times in the lifespan of one of those Sincro machines.
