Generator Recommendations.

I've done a search and not come up with anything I'm after, so I thought I'd ask in this section.

I want to know if anyone has any specific recommendations for cheap(ish) generators for general garage use, i.e grinders, drills etc., NOT for a welder. For a decent safety margin I'd like to be looking or 1kW+ continuous. It probably won't have a hard life and it's total working time will probably be between 10-20 hours.
I've had a workzone Aldi special that seems to have broken after a few seconds use, not sure on the issue, so I'd like some recommendations on specific makes and models that'll do the job without breaking the bank.

would be ideal but I've never heard of the brand and don't want to be lumbered with a "portable 2kW" paperweight.

have you thought about used hondas / they are very reliable.
what happened to your aldi engine fault or no power

To be honest all the Hondas I've seen still command strong money (almost rrp) or are spares or repairs.

The workzone one ran fine except you couldn't let the choke out, but it has no power output. I plugged in my grinder and when I turned it on it literally ran or about a second and shut off. I tried resetting the breaker but it doesn't look like it tripped it, I had the front panel off to make sure it was all connected and healthy and couldn't see anything immediately wrong. I don't want to start tearing it apart because I'm still not sure I can take it back and don't want to void the warranty.

I would take it back if less then a year old and chance another one it could be that you just a bad one

I think I want a different one anyway, off the top of my head its rated for 900W but only 500W or so continuous, which isn't brilliant for what I need except for my dremel and a dim light bulb.

What's your grinder rated at, my 4 1/2" Dewalt draws 800 watts so would overload your gennie.

701W if I recall correctly. I actually bought it with my grinder in mind specifically, but this was when I didn't know as much about generators as I do now and was under the impression that the 900W was the continuous rating, and halfway through the manual in little writing was the 500W rating. Regardless, is that not the function of the circuit breaker?

Probably wiped out the AVR if it has one.

I have a KDE2200, it's not something that I would like to run anything sensitive off but it was £80 second hand and runs my cement mixer, drill and angle grinder. I doubt it would last long If worked hard but until a reasonabley priced Lister or similar turns up it works well. The electric start is a big bonus.

I take it that's a kipor then, my mate used a kipor kde 6500ta for long enough and didn't look after it, it 1300 hours on the clock before the starter went and then a valve stem snapped, I have it now working fine, I also have a petter / lister ac1 and a lombardini all diesels and 4 or 5 petrols

You want to let any of them go cheap?

The other thing with my generator is the noise, if you in a residential area you won't be popular. A single cylinder diesel at 3000 rpm is ..... uncouth!

You can never have too many toys! I have been gathering bits to build a 3000w Lister driven set - almost there and so far it's cost £10 the only problem is finding the time to put it all together.

I got my 2kw Honda powered one from ebay.....misspelt generator.... £30!

A vast array of Honda generators on eBay are fakes, beware.

Plus there is no such brand as "swisscraft" its this weeks sticker they are putting on the abortions they are knocking out in the Chinese factory.

Here's my kipor that I got as a scrapper years ago, it refuses to die. Been dropped in the canal last year.. Has had a new carb, ignition module, and the fuel pumps gone, hence the classy mower tank. But its still putting out power.

Made some progress, went and picked up a new generator yesterday from London, and I now remember why I hate travelling in London. It needs a bit of love but I got it for a fair price so I'm happy, however I'm now in need of a step up transformer as it only has two 110v outlets. There doesn't seem to be many on ebay, I'll throw a wanted ad up on here and see what turns up.
