have you tried loading the 110 volt socket? Worth trying that to see if the alternator has any power? Not fiddled much with dual voltage generators, but i would guess that it is a simple series\parallel set up so if the 110 works, then probably there isn't much to find why there is no 240. A circuit diagram would be useful but I suspect even if you have a hand book then there is unlikely to be a proper diagram.

There will be a rectifier, by the way as the exciter is D.C.

will try the 110 out put .the voltmeter on the genie says 110 when its up and running so i presume that works ok .

if you only have a 240V light use that it should light up just expect it to be a bit dim

It looks like a Kubota generator,maybe a model 3000 or 3500.
The black box would be the excitor/regulator module.

hello everbody .ok so i have just tried the 110v output with a lead light ,and it came on but dim .so that works (i think ,sorry iam not a sparky )
so if that helps anyone .

where were you taking the readings from, eg terminal one to earth? or to another terminal.?

what sort of switch is used to change voltage, I'm guessing here but as there are four terminals in the alternator, which I'm assuming is two by 120 volt output windings and connecting either in series or parallel would give 240 or 120. To do this needs a four pole changeover switch rated at the output current of the machine.

The lamp you tested it with wouldn't have put much load on it but did the voltage stay constant?

i marked the pic (the terminals i tested 1to 4 )i earthed to the genie .there is an earth point on the main pannel where all the switches are, bottom right corner

i think the switch in question is a rocker switch

the lamp when i plugged it in was just dim .did not seam to flicker

Hello Joe,

if you look at the back of the rocker switch, how many terminals doe sit have?

The other point is if you are checking voltage between the generator frame and those four terminals, as none of the terminals gave you zero volts, the windings are not earthed so your voltage readings could well be wrong anyway.

Try a resistance measurement between the four terminals (Engine not running of course) I would guess that you have two windings so you should get a resistance measurement between two and a similar reading between the other two. If so run the engine and measure the voltage at the two pairs of terminals?

My suspicion is that the problem lies at the switch, either it is faulty, a wire is off or someone has been messing with it?
