have you tried loading the 110 volt socket? Worth trying that to see if the alternator has any power? Not fiddled much with dual voltage generators, but i would guess that it is a simple series\parallel set up so if the 110 works, then probably there isn't much to find why there is no 240. A circuit diagram would be useful but I suspect even if you have a hand book then there is unlikely to be a proper diagram.
There will be a rectifier, by the way as the exciter is D.C.
