Gasket sealant.

Its been a while since I rebuilt a pinto engine. Now apart from rocker lid and obviously head gasket, is there another gasket that absolutely should not have sealer? Is there a decent one fits all type sealer, I really don't want two or three tubes of the stuff going hard in the cupboard.

Depends on the engine, a lot rely only on sealer and have no gaskets on some parts

You dont seem to be able to escape the need for silicone sealants these days but they do need to be used with care. Gagging gaskets in goo has destroyed many an engine when all the excess internally has eventually found its way onto the oil pickup gauze and plugged it. On paper gaskets like waterpumps to the block etc I just use grease.

Hi, In fact the rocker cover gasket being cork, like the sump gasket, shouldn't have any sealant because it acts a lubricant and causes the gasket to be squeezed out. Ones like the inlet manifold gasket have a waxy coating so they are OK, however I usually put a smear of Hylomar around the water gallery.

Stag Wellseal is my go to sealer, it doesn't harden so you don't end up with bits floating around in your engine.

Just re-read this and see its a Pinto.

I have used silicone on cork rocker cover gasket, just apply it to the joint between the top of the gasket and the rocker cover set it on a flat surface and let it set. I know the Pinto cam box is slightly different but as long as it sets before you tighten you will be OK.
As Colin has said the problem is the sealant acting as a lube and allowing the gasket to squeeze out of place.

I assume it will not be the case on this engine (unless you are really environmental conscious) but be careful with silicone on exhaust parts on cars with catalytic converts as tiny amounts of silicon cam poison a catalytic converter.

always use hylomar on my engines if its good enough for rolls Royce its good enough for me .ive built 4 pinto engines and raced them no problems

been doing this for 50 years
FOR GOOD GASKET FACES........
cork gasket's like rocker cover's etc are glued in place with 3m contact adhes...ie.glue gasket to rocker cover, other side leave dry, no sealant at all...ever..
gasket faces that may need to come apart inc m/cyles primary's etc, 1 side use well seal on 1 side other gasket face leave dry
most modern sumps etc use RTV or D silicone NO GASKET.....U DON"T NEED A LOT........
FOR BAD GASKET FACES.....depending on damage, Hylomar on the bad side/face.....

always best with good gasket faces but not always poss.......
modern head gaskets and in fact top quality gaskets for water and oil are now lined / ringed with some kinda silicone inset....

if u still have problems after this u need to look for other things.......

had an old knacker in that kept blowing rocker box gaskets, apart from the engine being worn out the breather was totaly blocked....

Red rubber grease on rubber seals,
Threebond 1215 for face fit.

I normally use Yambond in my engine builds which is very expensive but i have found an equivalent in building size tubes..its not a Silicone but more acrylic based so not affected by oil ect....The secrete is smear on one face only with a finger and no thicker than 3 sheets of paper, all this pumping straight from the nozzle onto the face gives you about 10 times too much than you need and runs the risk of blocking galleries and even ending up in your oil pick-up gauze in the sump...Anyway you all know this so i will shut up

That's it exactly. If everyone had applied just enough and no more, gooey gaskets in a tube wouldn't have acquired such a bad rep. It's entirely down to eejits who knew no better and didn't bother to find out, that many an engine met an early scrapyard.

Thanks all. I used hylomar in the 70s. strange how some products don't vanish in time. I seem to remember blue water, red oil??? or was that another product.

Yep, only ever use it on uneven tin sump pans, everything else gets surface sealant, especially gearboxes and cam ladders where tolerances matter.
