Used to be two different products, Stag was red and set hard, Wellseal was brown and stays sticky. I still have a tin, was made by Wellworthy pistons, hence the name. When I assembled L60 tank engines as an apprentice, we had to use it on one surface, then get a cotton thread and lay it on the goo in a single strand, right round, overlapping the ends, but not crossing them. The regular assembly fitters had a ball point pen with the innards, including ball, removed and a reel of cotton wired to the top, they would write the cotton thread on using the pen.

What was the purpose of the cotton thread? To make a tight seal around the gasket edge?
My father worked at Wellworthy's in the 1930's. As a lad I recall him having an old tin of Wellseal & swearing by it, I didn't realise it was a Wellworthy product, but it makes sense now. I remember it having a consistency of treacle, is that right.

Not round the edge, between the faces, I assume it is the same as using paper, to fill any imperfections. The fitters said that Army mechanics would always have gasket goo and a reel of cotton, so could repair stuff in battle conditions, whereas big sheets of paper or proper gaskets would be a lot harder to find. Yes it is like treacle, my tin has gone very thick, but I still used it on the lawnmower carb this week.
