gas transporting

can gas bottle be transported on the side or slight angle?,

i am picking some up and can't fit them upright in van

What bottles are you picking up ??

Officially, all cyclinders must be carried standing up...however, you can lay down the Argon & Co2 mixes for short journeys.

You can also with Oxygen, but Acetylene & Propane must be transported upright.

Also, by law (which no one sticks to), in an enclosed vehicle you can only carry a maximum of 2 x 10ltr cylinders.

If you're talking shielding gas then yes, it can be transported laid on it's side.

Shield gas will be perfectly fine layed down.

The only one you dont want to be, is acetylene iirc.

my old boss always moves it laying down in van the garage i just brought came with a nearly full set so i wont need to for ages but we nebver use to have any probs?

I do believe that is the case but not officially.
I've just found an article which suggests leaving the cylinder for 2 days to allow the acetone to settle again. The risk is that the acetone will be expelled with the gas causing the flame to spit. Better to avoid that risk completely and transport them upright .

2 days! 20 mins tops i think - gas bottles out first, then rest of the stuff unloaded, then get to work with them!

sounds about right. Don't forget to check insurance some policy limit the amount of gas allowed.

i have to say he use to go collect (acetlyne) it in a astra van laid down pull it straight out and use it straight away as it usually ran out in middle of a job !!!

I know what the theory says about allowing them to settle, but I've carted DA s all over the country laid down and never had a problem using them straight away,

I saw quite an argument on site when contractors turned up with bottles lying in back of Transit - engineer would not issue a hot work permit 'til they had stood for 24 hours.

Isn't there something about an air pocket in an Acetelene cylinder can get hot?
Maybe he thought it would stop the O2 bottle overheating?, I wouldn't be hanging around to find out though!
