You can use a short back cap with anything, in my opinion you don't need a stubby if beginning to learn

If using a 17 I think the stubby lenses are a god send (vertually transform the head to a 9/20 size.) no harm in using everything possible to make learning easier. It's not cheating it's just making results come easier.

Probably work out cheaper to buy a 9 head gas lens with ceramics kit.
I can't help but think a stubby kit must reduce the usable current range as it bring the hot work close and the ceramics are thinner. I might be wrong?
