Just been watching a few on YouTube & I swear most of them I watched barely a tool looked used!

I always find it interesting to see how people lay things out & what tools they have

I miss having a workshop/garage of my own

You say that but then it doesn’t take much to clean things off. I go overall my stuff with air gun and wipe down before finishing with it. That’s just me though I guess.

Seen a few on here with 14 crescents of the same size or 8 socket sets the same size all laid out.

It's easy to end up having, lost one or forgot a tool, go get a replacement, the original turns up later. I ended up with umpteen sets of pliers at one point as I use to keep sets in all my cars then forgot to put them back ounce went away was asked to do a job and had no tools so headache of having to buy more of the same to get the job done, to far to home and get the tools.

As you say there's a difference between well used tools put away tidily and ones that have clearly never been out the box.

There's not many tools I haven't used, Occasionally I've bought a tool thinking it would be really handy. But haven't used it!

I cant think of anything in my shed that I dont use, one or two bits dont get used often but handy to have when needed.

I know a couple of lads that have fantastic shops
Machines hand tools etc
They never use them just like collecting and arranging tools and machines

I just don't see the point in that

We know a bloke who has Snap on Screw driver sets in every colour!

Same here, clean up and put stuff away every night . I used to be a messy worker but I forced myself over many years to clean as I go even if I am working on the same project the next day. Upside down at the moment with all the building alterations going on, I just find it easier to go back to the tool box where I know a tool is than try to remember where I last used it.

Been trying to convince one of our young engineers to do that! Doesn't help he doesn't seem to be able to see whats smack infront of him either . . . making him go for a wander around the place (big place!) to find another . . .

It’s hard as you say with a lot going on. But does make life so much easier!

I have started to put things in project boxes, if a project stalls I just pack it away and get it out when bits or time allows. Its just another way of keeping a benchtop clear and not losing/mixing up project bits. God I am sad git

As an apprentice (in 50s) we were inspected every morning. clean dust coat, clean hands, hair cut etc.
This was in the radio TV trade every repair was checked by workshop manager Ex Navy. not only did it have to work correctly the case had to be polished as well, he was an imposable person but him & my mother instilled tidiness so clean tools workshop are a given.

In one of our garages we ran a Saturday workshop for our customers to work on their own vintage vehicles, the first thing they were told was 1/ oil on floor wipe it up now! not later. 2/ if parts are on the floor it's junk & could end up in the bin. 3/ all tools used are cleaned before hanging on the shadow boards & if there are gaps we all stay till we find it.
It was popular a bit pre men's shed, the spin off was it helped to educate them to how long things seem simple take & cost
I don't see it as sad @8ob it saves time in the long run & I am sure @Parm would love the H&S bit of it.
If I loose a spanner or socket it is grump till found.
@bricol Mr Hiller would have sent him home to think about error of his ways, it would be called bulling to day

My workshop, one bench covered in 4" s of sawdust, the other a clutter of stuff I haven't found a place for.

The French have an expression, a tidy workshop, is a workshop where nothing gets done.

I'm in the 'I like it organised' camp.

It helps me to make sure I've got all my tools back together once I've finished a job and give them wipe over ready for next time

Some folks hobby is buy tools and having a workshop. Other folk use them each to their own.
