Garage roof options / considerations

Heres a couple of pictures of my onduline roof, it is boarded underneath with OSB for stability, the boarding makes it last far far longer, as Ive a field shelter where I used it but it sagged a bit in the really hot weather.

According to the data sheet its good down to 10 degrees, you just increase the overlap a bit.

A great little app for calculating roof angles is called right angle, I use it all the time, you fill in two field and it gives the other two fields, quicker and easier than working it out yourself.

It's hard to make choices -

The sheet steel stuff is light, looks an easy job to fit, looks *initially* cheap, but would look not so good.

I was all ready to make the compromise, and called up a supplier...

All the extra stuff you need basically doubles the initial mtr2 price.

So that's option 1. I'm looking at about £700 for a finish that I could live with if it were a budget option...

Option 2, the individual metal slate things just look to be crazy money. I've not investigated them that far, but they're a bit like the sheet stuff (as in you need all the extras) but are way more expensive than the sheet to begin with.


Then there's the felt option. Probably 350 for ply and another £100 at least for the other stuff, probably more.

So let's call that option 3. Felt at £500. Poor longevity and I didn't want it looking like a shed...

Option 4 - fibre cement slates.

Needs the pitch altering. About £70 or so in additional steel. But then my concrete prefab gable end sections won't fit any more. But I don't mind filling them with timber. Maybe £60 for the timber?

Then the fibre cement slate is actually more money than real slate. But it's loads lighter. Id have no concern about the weight of it at all.

Membrane maybe £80. Batterns I have no idea - £80?

Fibre cement slate, 400 ish. Probably £450 with the rivet fixing etc.

And some ridge tiles. They're always comming up for sale at about £3 each, so another £60 on them.

At a guess, about £800 all in. For a reasonably nice looking roof.


Option 5 - natural slate.

Cost same as above, but less about £100. Probably less another hundred if I can be bother to drive and pick up reclaimed, but £700 if I don't want to make life hard for myself.

Best looking option by far. But also the heaviest. And one of the most work.


You can see why I'm still weighing things up.

if you're looking down on it from the garage anyway... why not make a green roof?

layer of plastic, then soil and plant grass? - the low pitch is better here anyway

It would weigh about 10x what the slate would...

ah... I didn't think about the weight

tho I bet you could build a new support structure, board over it, put DPM on and then soil/grass on top for pretty cheap
(if you get the soil for free..... and I think it would look really cool)

You really want the slate roof so work out how to strengthen and raise the roof/pitch otherwise it sounds like it is really going to bug you.

the strengthening is going to cost and as the originals are fastened inside thats where the strengthening needs to be
