Garage roof options / considerations

Is an option, or the metal tile look a like sheets that you can get insulated.

Sounds like you'd really like it to look as slate-esque as possible. That's fair enough; I slate roofed a crummy outhouse here for no reason other than it was in the garden. The thing that would concern me in that case is not whether the slates would look convincing, or whether the low pitch would leak a bit but whether the low pitch with slates would even look plausible? I'm not saying it won't, I'm not sure either way!

Fibre slates are lighter but they do not look the same, they are too uniform. They aren't too bad once they are old but they also attract moss. My house is T shape and the front section has fibre slates and it's covered in clumps of moss yet the the rear section which is more shaded has none and never had any on the slates even after 150 years.

@julianf have you thought about putting a small steel frame inside it? The would give you some options like a hoist on the centre beam and no issues with roof weight. I guess it's trying to find the balance between not spending a shed load of money and getting something you are happy with.

I've considered it, yes. But with a load of choices that will bring I'll just be delayed even further.

Bob, that may be the solution.

The metal artificial ones that were suggested previously were a significant cost, which, when you're getting somthing you don't really want, is off-putting.

The sheets you link to are cheap. They're probably fairly ugly up close, but maybe I can compromise for the quick and cheap solution.

I'd actually looked at the website too, but they're on the last page of that product group and just had not spotted them.

I think I'll give them a call on Monday to see if them have anywhere local that I can actually have a look at them.

Just me being silly really thinking of the row the tins make when its raining ,the sweating and how fragile they are between purlins when walking about on them.

20mm ply and polythene membrane, temp fly battens until we put the sheets up.

I think i might have stuffed something up here...

Id done the numbers and come up with a 10 degree pitch, but the actual roof looks steeper than that?

Ive just put two numbers into CAD and its telling me otherwise.

The real-world measurements that i took are -

a) the length of one roof face (ie from ridge to eave) (1920mm)
b) the total width of the roof (3780mm)

Using trig Julian I come to just over 10°. Method:

Edit - I see I wrote 1970 when it should be 1920. I've double checked the working and I used the correct figure in it, I just wrote the wrong thing down.

If you go with ketal Id suggest not being a tightwad, and use insulated stuff, even 40mm will make a huge difference condensation wise.

you will be fine at 10 degrees on steel roof not slate roof as it sufferes blow back

Hi Julian,

I have an onduline roof on my shed and I think it looks pretty good.

It's available in black, green and red and sits well on a shallow pitch, mine is about 15°.

I thought I had a pic but the only one I could find was this one (sorry!)

We used the felt roof shingles on our gazebo from this lot: https://www.tuin.co.uk/EXTRAS-For-Log-Cabins.html

Looks alright and much sturdier than the normal shed felt.

its also dry under there as well spent many a time having a smoke under there in the rain

i can also state this is dry at far 2 windows done by burdekin and a nice job at that
